JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis teams bounced back from a Friday setback in Ohio Valley Conference play to post a pair of wins against Morehead State on Saturday at the JSU Tennis Courts.
The Gamecock men and women won by identical sores of 5-2 over the Eagles. The men's squad moved to 7-11 on the season and 3-2 in league play. The Jax State women improved to 6-13 overall and picked up the fourth win against OVC competition.
In the men's contest, for the second consecutive match Jax State claimed the doubles point. JSU's tandem of Austin McCormick and Jaryd Reese registered a 6-3 win at No. 2 over MSU's team of Enrique Samudio and Ognjen Sunjevaric. JSU's pairing of Mathias Chaim and Pedro Wagner sealed the doubles point at No. 3 with a 6-4 win over Nick Mercer and Sebastian Penaloza.
The Gamecocks maintained the momentum from doubles into singles play as Reese and Chaim added another win on the day with straight set wins at No. 2 and 3 respectively. Reese ousted Gabriel Ruiz 6-4, 6-2, while Chaim topped Samudio 7-5, 6-2.
Freshman Vinicio Hadlich won in three sets over Mercer at No. 4. After splitting the first two sets, Hadlich carded a 6-3 win in the third set for the point. Freshman Andres Gomez found himself in a three set battle with Ognjen Sunjevaric. Gomez won the first and third set for the win.
In the women's match, doubles mirrored the men's match with JSU winning the point. The duo of Claudia Marsala and Diana Mirceta downed MSU's pairing of Hayley Wild and Maria Ornellena, 6-3. JSU's team of Courtney Conley and Sadey St. Amant quick-worked MSU's Lindsey Wild and Aleksandra Savic, 6-1.
MSU's only points of the match came at the top of the lineup as Jax State won the rest of the singles matches in convincing fashion. Genevie Ulanday carded a 6-3, 7-5 win over Haley Wild at No. 3, while Merceta, St. Amant and Conley turned in wins after a successful day in doubles. St. Amant went 2-0 on the weekend in singles after posting a win against Eastern Kentucky.
The JSU men will step out of conference play on Thursday, April 6 with a make up visit to Troy. Both squads return to OVC play next weekend on the road at Eastern Illinois and SIU Edwardsville.
