Women's BoxCHARLESTON, Ill. – The Jacksonville State men's tennis team inched closer to securing a spot in the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament with a key 4-3 win over Eastern Illinois on the EIU campus on Friday afternoon.
The conference win was the Gamecocks' fourth of the season (8-12, 4-2 OVC)) and moved into third place in the conference standings with three matches left in the regular season. JSU will face SIU Edwardsville on Saturday before hosting Austin Peay and Murray State to round out the league slate.
The JSU women dropped a tough 6-1 match to the Panthers and will look to regroup on Saturday at SIUE. The setback moved Jax State to 6-14 on the season and 4-3 against OVC competition.
In the men's contest, JSU gained the advantage with the doubles point. The No. 2 duo of
Austin McCormick and
Jaryd Reese needed little time in taking our EIU's pairing og Ryan Henderson and Trent Reiman, 6-0. The point was clinched at No. 3 as JSU's team od
Mathias Chaim and
Pedro Wagner edged Grant Reiman and Ognjen Jevtic, 7-5.
EIU bounced back in singles as they made it close until the very end with wins at No. 1, 2 and 4. Chaim picked up his second win of the day with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Grant Reiman at No. 3. Jax State's bottom half of the lineup was strong with Liu Shao Chun and
Andres Gomez winning in straight sets. Shao Chun topped Trent Reiman 7-6, 6-0, while Gomez ousted Jevtic, 7-5, 6-1.
On the women's side, the lone JSU point came at No. 2 singles. Jax State's
Claudia Marsala cruised past EIU's Ali Foster, 6-1, 6-1.
Courtney Conley opened her match with Abby Carpenter with a 6-2 win, but Carpenter bounced back to with 6-2, 10-4.
