West Shuts Down Alabama State in Midweek Win

JACKSONVILLE – Taylor West tossed a two-hit shutout to lift the Jacksonville State softball team to a 4-0 win over Alabama State in midweek action at University Field on Tuesday.

The senior from Anniston needed just 89 pitches to notch her fifth complete game and second shutout of the season. West faced just 23 batters in guiding the Gamecocks (22-9) to their second win over the Hornets (9-21) this season.

Senior Cadi Oliver was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored, while also drawing a walk for JSU at the plate. Freshman Alexus Jimmerson drove in a pair of runs, while she and sophomore Anna Chisolm each scored once in the win.

West (9-4) allowed just two baserunners and retired the last 14 batters she faced and struck out four in an efficient outing in the circle. Her 44th career win ties her with Carly Kellam (2005-06) for fifth on the school's career wins list.

JSU staked her to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to a one-out double down the left field line by Oliver that set up an RBI grounder from Jimmerson, who later scored on a wild pitch.

Jimmerson drove in the next run on a single up the middle that scored Chisolm in the fifth, a play that also brought around Oliver when center fielder Valerie Centeno airmailed a throw to the backstop.

JSU got all four runs off of ASU starter Justine Jean (2-8), who allowed just one earned run on five hits in 4.2 innings of work. Charlene Castro allowed a walk in 1.1 innings of hitless relief.

The midweek win sets JSU up for a big matchup at home on Wednesday against No. 24 Ole Miss. The Rebels will visit University Field for a 5 p.m. game. JSU students and all fans ages 18 and under get in free, and tickets are available online at www.jsugamecocksports.com Tuesday night for just $5. Admission will be $8 on Wednesday.
