Volleyball Sweeps Midweek Match with Jackson State

JACKSONVILLE – In a brief break from Ohio Valley Conference play, the Jacksonville State volleyball team swept Jackson State, 3-0, in a Wednesday midweek matchup inside Kennamer Hall.

The Gamecocks ran their overall record to 12-12, and will take their 4-6 OVC mark back into league play this weekend at home against Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State. The Lady Tigers (11-18) hit just .157 on the night against the home "JSU" squad that improved to 12-0 in the all-time series.

Four Gamecocks hit over .350 as Jax State combined for a .277 team clip in the clean sweep. Junior Kaylee Frear dominated with a team-high 13 kills on a .688 attack percentage on offense to go along with seven blocks. Senior Mackenzie Rombach recorded 10 kills for her fifth double-digit putaway total of the season, and added three blocks on the opposite side of the net. Redshirt-sophomore Sadie Anderson and junior Shayla Schmidt hit .353 and 500, respectively, as Anderson tallied eight kills, and Schmidt with three.

Sophomore Kaylie Milton had four of her eight kills on the night in the first set as Jax State pulled away late from a 13-all tie to win the opening stanza, 25-17. Sophomore setter Lexie Libs, who finished with 16 assists, ran the offense for the first frame, but gave way to freshman Claire Behan in the later sets.

Behan helped the Gamecock overcome a late 17-12 deficit in the second to rally for a 13-4 run to take the set, 25-21. A pair of late Ashley Clingan service aces pulled the Gamecocks back in front. Clingan finished the evening with a career-best five aces, while Behan's 24 assists finished the night as a season-high for the Nashville, Tenn., product.

The Gamecocks were cruising toward their second-straight home sweep up 20-12, when the Lady Tigers reeled off six-straight points forcing a home timeout. Jax State responded out of the break to win the match with a 25-20 decision in the third.

Libero Dani Steele collected a team-high 12 digs, followed by Anderson with nine.

The Gamecocks return to Kennamer Hall on Friday night at 7 p.m. for "Halloween Night" against Eastern Kentucky. On Saturday, JSU will "Pink Out" Morehead State at 2 p.m.
