Terry Swings, Jimmerson Pitches JSU to Split in Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Jada Terry drove in three runs in the first game and homered in the second to lead the Jacksonville State softball team to a split on Day Two of the Charleston Invitational on Saturday.

The Freshman from Trinity, Ala., had a three-run double in a 4-0 win over Georgetown that started the day and then hit her second career homer in a 4-2 loss to Texas. The opener was the Gamecocks' second shutout of the Hoyas in as many days, while the finale snapped JSU's five-game win streak.

Terry went 2-for-3 in the opener, including her sixth-inning double to left that broke open what was a one-run game at the time. IN the loss to Texas, she belted a solo homer to left in the fourth to try and cut into the Longhorns' early lead.

In the morning contest against Georgetown (6-20), it was a dominant Alexus Jimmerson in the circle that lifted JSU to the victory. She didn't allow a run while scattering eight hits, walking two and striking out one over 7.0 innings. It's the second complete game shutout against the Hoyas in as many days after Faith Sims' gem on Friday.

At the plate, Jacksonville State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with some two-out magic. After back-to-back strikeouts started the innings, Amber Jones was hit and Terry followed by singling a 1-0 pitch into left field. Emily Woodruff made it three-straight Gamecocks to reach base when she singled into left field to plate Jones.

Zeros were traded for the next three innings until Jacksonville State added three insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh when Terry doubled home Leila Chambers, Hannastasyia Weaver and Taylor Beshears with two outs in the inning.

Against Texas, the Longhorns got out to a quick 2-0 lead after the top of the first when Taylor Ellsworth scored MK Tedder and Paige von Sprecken with a two-out double.

Jacksonville State got one back in the bottom half of the frame, however, when Beshears doubled home Caitlyn Sapp, who lead off the inning with a walk. The Gamecocks tried to keep the rally going by loading the bases following a Chambers single, but an unassisted double play ended the threat.

Texas added an unearned run in the second when Janae Jefferson singled through the right side to plate Tuesda DerMargosian, who reached second base via a throwing error on a fielder's choice. The Longhorns added their fourth run of the game in the top of the third when Tedder reached on an infield single, then advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a fly ball to right field, then scored on a passed ball two outs in the inning.

It took until the bottom of the fourth for Jacksonville State to answer when Terry led off the inning by drilling the first pitch she saw over the left-field fence.
However, only Woodruff managed to reach base the rest of the game as she recorded singles in the fourth and sixth innings.

The Gamecocks will conclude action in the Charleston Invitational tomorrow morning when they play host school College of Charleston at 11:15 a.m. Sunday morning.
