JACKSONVILLE – After four weekends of non-conference action, the Jacksonville State volleyball team will open Ohio Valley Conference play on the road this weekend with visits to Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky.
The Gamecocks (7-6) will head into league play ranked in the top five of OVC schools in kills, hitting percentage, assists, blocks and opponent hitting percentage. Only Morehead State (9-4), who JSU opens the weekend against, also ranks in the top five of the conference in those five categories.
First-year head coach Todd Garvey's squad has maintained a balanced attack with five players with 90 or more kills, led by freshman Lena Kindermann's 135. Sophomore Kaylee Frear is second on the team with 120, but her efficiency hitting .328 places her second among the entire OVC in hitting percentage. Freshman Addie Halverson and senior Mackenzie Rombach have also reached triple-digits in kills, pushing Rombach to 873 for her career.
The offense, which averages 12.7 kills per set is directed by sophomore Lexie Libs, who enters the weekend with 505 assists. Across the net, Libs' 118 digs are second on the team behind sophomore Kaylie Milton's 158. Milton and sophomore Jade Humphrey (116 digs) have split time as the Gamecocks' libero throughout the early portion of the schedule. Adding to the defensive presence are senior Ashley Clingan's 71 digs that sit just ahead of Halverson, Sadie Anderson and Dani Steele.
JSU will open the weekend on Friday at Morehead State with a 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT match time. The Gamecocks and Eagles will meet for the 32nd time, with MSU owning an 18-13 advantage in the series. The home team has won each of the last five matchups, putting JSU's last road win in the series back in 2014. Jax State will look to end that streak in the process of winning its third-straight conference opener.
Saturday's contest at Eastern Kentucky has been slightly altered due to issues with McBrayer Arena on the campus of EKU. The backend of the weekend schedule against the Colonels (1-11) will now be played at Madison Central High School, located just down the road from EKU's campus. The school address is listed below. JSU holds a slim 16-15 advantage in the series, but is just 4-11 in Richmond, Ky.
Live stats will be available for both contests and links can be found at JSUGamecockSports.com. Friday's match at MSU will also be streamed on the OVC Digital Network, but due to facility relocation on Saturday similar to JSU's situation this season, there will not be a stream on Saturday.
