Basketball hosts SIUE in OVC doubleheader Saturday afternoon

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's and women's basketball teams continue a four-game homestand Saturday with an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader against Southern Illinois Edwardsville at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Tipoff of the women's game is slated for 2 p.m., while the men's game is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m. Both games will broadcast on ESPN+.
The Gamecock women look to continue their momentum from Thursday's 29-point victory over Eastern Illinois.
JSU (8-6, 2-1 OVC) has won two straight league games since falling to preseason favorite Belmont in the conference opener. The Cougars (6-8, 1-2 OVC) also beat EIU back in the opening weekend of OVC play, and are coming off a 79-55 loss at Tennessee Tech when they arrive at The Pete. SIUE leads the series heading into the 10th all-time meeting, 6-3. JSU's only home win came back in head coach Rick Pietri's first season on Jan. 13, 2014.
While the two squads average similar figures scoring, JSU's league-best 57.1 points allowed scoring defense is five points better than the Cougars. Nationally, JSU is tied with Texas A&M for the 41st-best defense in the nation, and ranks in the top 20 in opponent's field goal percentage.
A balanced lineup has seen seven different Gamecocks reach double figures this season, with three reaching the 20-point plateau. Freshman JuToreyia Willis came off the bench against EIU to record a new career-high 15 points to lead Jax State, topping her previous best of six points at Alabama A&M in December. Meanwhile, first-year transfer Brittany Webster led the way on the glass with eight rebounds.

The Jacksonville State men are on a historic run entering Saturday's game against SIUE. The Gamecocks have won 11 of their last 13 games and are on a four-game winning streak.
For the first time in program history, JSU is 3-0 to begin OVC play. The last time a Gamecock squad was 3-0 to begin league play was 2002-03 as members of the Atlantic Sun. In addition, their 11-2 mark over the last 13 games is the best 13-game clip in 19 years.
Jacksonville State is coming off a 69-62 home win over Eastern Illinois on Thursday. The Gamecocks edged out the Panthers for their third consecutive win in the series with the help of double-digit scoring efforts from Jason Burnell, Marlon Hunter and Detrick Mostella. Head coach Ray Harper has JSU on a four-game winning streak and is one win away from tying the longest under his tenure.
SIUE goes into the weekend matchup following a 78-69 overtime loss to Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tenn., on Thursday. Senior guard David McFarlane led the Cougars with 17 points and Daniel Kinchen pitched in 14 off the bench, but two overtime points were not enough to overcome the Golden Eagles at the Eblen Center.
McFarlane paces the Cougars with 220 points this season, averaging 14.7 per game, while junior forward Brandon Jackson leads on the boards with 6.5 rebounds per game and is shooting a team-best .540.
