SHREVEPORT, La. – Low rounds from
Patricio Freundt-Thurne and
Quim Vidal Mora led the Jacksonville State men's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the LSU David Toms Intercollegiate on Sunday.
Freundt-Thurne fired a final-round 65 and Vidal Mora shot 68, each tying for 12
th out of 69 players in the 12-team event that was held on the Southern Trace Country Club. The Gamecocks turned in the second-best round of the day with a 10-under 278 that capped an 18-under 846 over the 54-hole event on the par-72, 7,048-yard layout.
Freundt-Thurne's career-low round of 65 tied him for the eighth-lowest round in school history and led the Gamecocks to the 16
th-best round vs. par ever by a JSU team. Host LSU was the only team in the field that played better than the Gamecocks on Sunday, shooting a 271 to put an exclamation point on a 63-under 801 that won the event by 37 shots over runner-up Memphis.
Freundt-Thurne made the biggest move on the leaderboard in Sunday's final round, catapulting 25 spots into 12
th, thanks to a round that featured eight birdies and an eagle three on the par-5 18
th hole. The Lima, Peru, native answered rounds of 74 and 72 on Saturday to make his move on Sunday. He made a total of 16 birdies in the tournament, tied for fourth in the field.
Vidal Mora eagled the par-5 first hole and then birdied twice in his bogey-free final round. The native of Barcelona, Spain, used a morning 73 and an afternoon 70 on Saturday to lay the foundation for his 54-hole score of 211.
Max Basler climbed seven spots on Sunday into a tie for 22
nd, thanks to a final-round 71 that saw him rally from being 4-over through eight holes. The native of Konigswinter, Germany played his final seven holes at 4-under to cap his 54-hole 215.
Jesus Dario Montenegro battled on Sunday and finished in a tie for 30
th in the field after a Sunday 80 capped his 217. The Buenos Aires, Argentina native overcame a tough start and played his final five holes at 3-under, thanks to three-straight birdies on holes 18, one and two.
Maximo Portais finished 51
st after a final-round 74 put the finishing touches on a 54-hole 223. Also a native of Buenos Aires, Portais birdied his first two holes on Sunday to set the tone for his round.
The Gamecocks will return to action on Oct. 21-22, when they compete in the Kennesaw State Pinetree Invitational at the Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, Ga.
