CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Jacksonville State rifle team turned in a solid weekend in the Palmetto State against The Citadel and North Georgia.
On Saturday, the Gamecocks posted a season-best 4654 in a tri-match with The Citadel and UNG and capped off the weekend with a 4623 against the Bulldogs of the Citadel on Sunday. JSU fired a 2347 in air rifle on Saturday and added a 2307 in smallbore. The Red and White tallied a 2341 in air rifle and carded a 2282 in smallbore.
In Saturday's action, Jax State finished 93 points better than The Citadel, who finished with a 4561. UNG combined for a 4504.
Senior
Zach Schmidt was the top individual finisher on Saturday, combing for an 1169. Schmidt, from Sudlersville, Maryland, fired a match-best 586 in smallbore and a 583 in air rifle. Sophomore
Mackenzie Van Patten matched Schmidt's aggregate score with the best air rifle score of the match as she tallied a 592. She also registered a 577 in smallbore. JSU's
Owen Goad claimed third place on Saturday with a 583 in air rifle and a 575 in smallbore. Senior
Sam Payne rounded out the top-four finishers with a 586 in ar rifle and a 568 in smallbore. JSU's
Michael Dietz posted JSU's final marks of the day with a 580 in air rifle and a 572 in smallbore.
On Sunday, it was Van Patten leading the way for the Gamecocks. The Nampa, Idaho native finished the weekend with a 589 in air rifle and a 572 in smallbore to claim the top individual spot with an aggregate score of 1161. Goad, a product of Chatham, Virginia, was four points back of the top spot with an 1157. He tallied a 587 in air rifle and a 570 in smallbore. Payne, Schmidt and Dietz rounded out the top-five spots on the individual leaderboard. Freshman
Kaila Jones recorded a final mark of 1127 to finish sixth overall.
Jax State will host The Citadel on Saturday, November 9 at the JSU Rifle Range inside Rowe Hall on the JSU campus.
