JACKSONVILLE – For the second time in a week, the Jacksonville State baseball team has been picked to the Ohio Valley Conference as Perfect Game, another web-bases media outlet that cover college baseball, released its OVC preview on Thursday.
Earlier this week, Jax State was pegged to win the league by D1Baseball.com. The official predicted order of finish and the preseason All-OVC team from the league office will be announced on Friday morning.
Perfect Game also named its preseason all-conference team with the preview and listed four Gamecocks on the preseason club, highlighted by redshirt junior Garrett Farmer and incoming freshman Isaiah Magwood.  Farmer was named the pitcher of the year, while Magwood was tabbed the freshman of the year. Farmer, one of the top returning pitchers in the league, also earned the same recognition by D1Baseball.com. Farmer posted a 7-2 record in 2018 and recorded 107 strikeouts. Magwood, from Hazel Green, Alabama was instrumental in leading the Trojans of Hazel Green to the AHSAA Class 6A State Championship. He was named to the Class 6A Alabama Sports Writers All-State First Team. Magwood, who will see time on the mound and in the line up, was listed by Perfect Game as the fifth-best right-handed pitcher prospect in the state of Alabama for the class of 2018 and the 13th ranked prospect in the state.
Senior Nic Gaddis along with sophomores Cole Frederick and Christian Edwards were mentioned on the preseason all-conference team. Gaddis finished his junior campaign with a .324 batting average, while Frederick turned in an All-OVC performance with a spot on the All-OVC Freshman Team. Frederick, a utility-type player, played five different spots on the diamond, including all three outfield spots. Edwards, will be in line to be the closer for JSU after a strong freshman season out of the bullpen in late-game situations. Edwards collected 55 strikeouts in 33.0 innings of work and registered three saves.
The Gamecocks will usher in the inaugural season at Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium on Friday, Feb. 15 against in-state rival North Alabama. First pitch on opening day is set for 3 p.m. Season tickets are available for purchase online at JSUGamecocksTickets.com, by phone at (256) 782-8499 and on campus at the JSU Ticket Office at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Children 18-years-old and under and JSU students are admitted free.
