LOMAN, Miss. – The Jacksonville State men's tennis team earned four consecutive wins in two days on its Mississippi road trip with wins over Jackson State and Alcorn State on Thursday and Friday.
The Gamecocks swept the Tigers 4-0 in straight contests in Jackson, Miss., on Thursday, while a 4-0 shutout and 4-1 win over Alcorn State pushed JSU's record to 5-0 to begin the year.
"Everybody played really well," head coach Andres Amores said. "It was a great week on the road with wins for both of our teams. It's nice to have such a great start to the season."
A doubles point and three singles points gave JSU its first win Thursday over Jackson State. The second contest required just four singles points as the match was shortened due to inclement weather. Both Aljaz Kaplja and Joaquin Vallejo earned wins in both matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
Kaplja and Sergio Lizarrage along with Vallejo and Alexander Vishnevskiy picked up the doubles point to put the Gamecocks ahead 1-0 in their first match at Alcorn on Friday. Vishnevskiy, Vallejo and Jordi Blanchar then claimed three singles wins to give Jacksonville State the 4-0 win.
The same doubles teams got the doubles point in the second match, while Guillermo Agost, Kaplja and Vishnevskiy each tallied singles wins.
The Gamecocks are off to their best start to a season since going 5-0 to begin the 2017 campaign. The last time a JSU men's tennis team had a better start was 7-0 in 2009.
Jacksonville State is back in action Saturday, Feb. 16 against Alabama State in Montgomery, Ala. The Gamecocks' next home match is set for Wednesday, Feb. 20 at noon against North Alabama.
