JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team will open a key weekend of Ohio Valley Conference play on Friday, when the Gamecocks host SIU-Edwardsville for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
The twinbill will be the first of two at University Field this weekend. Eastern Illinois will come calling on Sunday for pair of games that will start at 1 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.JSUGamecockSports.com/Tickets, and JSU students and fans ages 18 and under receive free admission. All four games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Gamecocks (19-8, 3-1 OVC) will look to improve upon a solid start to league play last week in Kentucky, while the Cougars (8-11, 0-0 OVC) will open league play after having to postpone both of their doubleheaders last week due to a team illness.
JSU opened OVC play with a sweep of Morehead State and then split a pair of games at preseason OVC favorite Eastern Kentucky on Sunday. Senior Faith Sims was stellar in the circle for the Gamecocks, going 3-0 with a 0.93 earned run average in three starts. She won both games to improve to 12-1 on the season with a 1.88 ERA. Her 12 wins are tops in the conference and rank 25thamong all Division I players.
Senior Anna Chisolm paced the JSU offensive attack over the weekend, going 7-for-14 with three home runs and eight RBI. She took over the team and conference lead in homers with 11 so far in 2019 and her 28 career homers are ninth-most by a player in school history. The St. Louis native's big week raised her season average to .342, third on the team behind Taylor Beshears' .449 and Karsen Mosley's .387.
The Gamecocks have hit 41 home runs so far in 2019, an average of 1.58 per game that ranks them eighth nationally. Chisolm's 11 lead the way, while Beshears is just behind her with nine. Mosley is third on the team with five, while senior Lex Hull has hit four. Ten different Gamecocks have at least one long ball under their belt so far this season.
