
Gamecocks Host Murray State With First Place On The Line

JACKSONVILLE – First place in the Ohio Valley Conference will be on the line when the Jacksonville State softball team hosts Murray State on Friday in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at University Field.
The Gamecocks (28-12, 12-4 OVC) enter the weekend tied for second place in the league standings, less than one game behind the Racers (21-20, 11-3 OVC) for first place. The two will square off on ESPN+. JSU students and fans ages 18 and under receive free admission, and tickets can be purchased online at www.JSUGamecockSports.com/Tickets.
JSU enters the twinbill having one three in a row and five of its last seven games, while the Racers have won eight of 10 coming in. JSU has won nine of the last 10 meetings with the Racers, including four in a row in Jacksonville. The Gamecocks swept the series with MSU last season, winning 5-0 and 9-3 in Murray, Ky., on March 30.
Taylor Beshears leads the JSU offense with a .415 batting average that ranks third in the OVC. The senior from Trussville, Ala., has 56 hits and 13 home runs, both second in the league, while her 35 RBI are fifth among OVC players.
Fellow Senior Anna Chisolm is third in the league with 12 home runs and is second on the team with a .330 average. Her 16 stolen bases lead the team and give the St. Louis, Mo., native a school-record 65 in her career at JSU.
In the circle, senior Faith Sims holds a 17-4 record and a 1.92 ERA to lead the Gamecocks. A native of Cordova, Ala., has tossed 16 complete games and eight shutouts in 22 starts this season. She leads the OVC in wins and is third in ERA. In OVC play, she holds a 1.17 ERA and leads the league with eight wins and 57 strikeouts. Her 142 strikeouts on the year are second in the conference.
The Racers have been led offensively by Lillie Goetz, whose .333 average and 32 RBI are both team highs. Hannah James has been the ace in the circle, posting an 11-9 record and a 2.66 ERA in 24 starts. Taylor Makowsky's has also posted a 1.70 ERA and a 7-2 record.
