JACKSONVILLE – After a makeshift season-opening weekend, Jacksonville State continues its season-opening homestand with a Tuesday tussle with in-state rival No. 22 Alabama on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.
First pitch is set for 4 p.m. Tickets are available online at JSUGamecockSports.com and at the Jim Case Stadium ticket office. The game will also be streamed on ESPN+ and aired on the Gamecock Sports Network.
The Gamecocks will be looking to shake off a pair of one-run setbacks during the first weekend of the season after falling to Southern Illinois, 8-7, in Friday's season debut and Tennessee Tech rallying late for a 5-4 decision. JSU downed Alabama State on Saturday, 5-3.  The Gamecocks were scheduled to open the season at Baylor, but winter weather conditions in the state of Texas caused a schedule switch. One of the luxuries of having a facility like JSU's home is that the program is able to play many games due to the field turf after many teams across the country were not able to get on the field due to the winter weather that swept through the nation last week. Jax State was able to find three other teams for the weekend in Jacksonville for a three-day, six-game event.
UA opened the season by sweeping McNeese State in a three-game series at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
The Crimson Tide's visit to the JSU campus will be the first of a two-game season set between the two clubs. JSU will travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Wednesday, March 10. The Crimson Tide has been on the Gamecocks' schedule for three-out-of-the-last-four seasons and were slated to face each other in a home-and-home set during the 2020 season. JSU has dropped the last three outings to Alabama after winning three straight from UA in 2017 and 20118. JSU swept the season series in 2017 and won in Tuscaloosa in 2018.
Senior Tre Kirklin led the Gamecocks over the weekend with four hits, including a key RBI double on Sunday against Tennessee Tech. Kirklin had hits in all three outings from the leadoff spot in the Gamecock order and enters the Alabama game riding an 11-game hitting streak dating back to the last eight games of the 2020 season. Junior Isaac Alexander delivered three RBI on the weekend, while graduate transfer Jaylyn Williams put together the best average over the three games at .333. Williams, who arrived at JSU in January, had three hits and collected four walks in his first weekend as a Gamecock.
Sophomore Isaiah Magwood will be making his 14th career start on Tuesday and his second appearance of the season. Magwood made a quick showing against SIU. It will be the third time he has faced the Crimson Tide as he made two appearances in 2019.
Following the UA contest, JSU's homestand continues with a three-game weekend series against Valparaiso. JSU and Valpo will open the weekend on Friday, February 27 at 4 p.m. and return to the diamond on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
