Tomac named Tennis Freshman of the Year, four deemed All-OVC

JACKSONVILLE – Four Gamecocks were listed among the Ohio Valley Conference's group of men's and women's all-conference honorees Friday morning. Maj Tomac headed up the Jax State award winners as the OVC Men's Tennis Freshman of the Year.

Also named to the Men's All-OVC First Team, Tomac was joined by fellow first-teamer Joaquin Vallejo. Aljaz Kaplja was voted to the second team, and women's senior Harriet Hamilton was named to the Women's Tennis All-OVC First Team.

In his first season as a Gamecock, Tomac posted a 10-4 singles record to tie for the team lead in victories, and managed a perfect 3-0 mark in league play. The Ljubljana, Slovenia, native finished the season on a four-match winning streak and was undefeated in starts at No. 2 and No. 5. In doubles play, he and Vallejo team up to go 12-3 overall and 7-3 in the OVC. The duo played all 15 of their matches at the No. 3 position and led Jacksonville State in doubles wins. He is the first Gamecock to earn freshman of the year honors since Kaplja in 2018.

Vallejo, named the No. 2 player in the conference's preseason poll, is now a two-time all-conference selection after making the second team in 2019. Along with his outstanding doubles record with Tomac, Vallejo was 10-5 in singles action as the Jax State ace. With all 15 of his appearances coming at No. 1, Vallejo tied for the team lead in singles victories and was 2-2 in OVC play. His third OVC award of the season, the Asuncion, Paraguay, native was also named the league's player of the week on March 24.

Kaplja rounded out the list of men's honorees with a spot on the second team. The senior from Radomlje, Slovenia, also tied for the team lead in singles wins with a 10-5 overall mark. He was 3-1 in conference play and ended the regular season on a three-match winning streak. A versatile piece in the JSU lineup, Kaplja recorded wins at No. 3, 4 and 5 over the course of the season. The second-team nod is the third all-conference honor of his career. Named the OVC Freshman of the Year in 2018, he was a first-team selection the same year and in 2019. He was also deemed the conference's player of the week April 21.

Hamilton, after being named the No. 6 player in the OVC preseason poll, is a first-team recipient for the first time in her career. The senior was an outstanding 15-2 overall in singles play to pace the Gamecocks in victories and was near-perfect in OVC action with a 5-1 record. She totaled 12 of her wins at the No. 2 position while also claiming three wins at No. 1. In doubles matches, she and Charlie Croteau teamed up for a 12-2 overall mark and 2-1 league record. The duo led Jacksonville State in doubles wins. An All-OVC Second Team selection in 2019, Hamilton was also named the league's player of the week on Feb. 24 of this season.

The four honorees and the Gamecocks now turn their attention to the OVC Tennis Championships, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the Wesselman Tennis Center in Evansville, Indiana. The men square off against Belmont at 10 a.m. Saturday, while the women are set to take on Southeast Missouri at 2p.m. on Saturday.
