JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis teams will hit the road this week to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals Thursday through Tuesday. JSU's men will head to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the ITA Southern Regionals at the University of Alabama, while the women travel to Baton Rouge, La., for that event at LSU.
"Going to Regionals is always an exciting time of the Fall," Jacksonville State head coach Mike Mucci said. "I'm looking forward to seeing how our teams compete against the best in the region, and I expect us to come home with some solid results that we'll use to build confidence for the Spring, both as a team and individually."
Jax State's men will square off against some of the top talent in the southeast in that event at Alabama. Other programs sending student-athletes to compete include Alabama, Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Auburn, Louisiana, LSU, Mississippi State, New Orleans Nicholls, North Alabama, Ole Miss, Samford, South Alabama, Troy, Tulane, and UAB. The men's side will hold qualifying and main draws for singles, but only a main draw for double competition.
Freshman Agustin Cuellar, who won the Consolation A Bracket Championship of the Grizzly Open last weekend, is in the singles main draw. He will be joined at the ITA Southern Regionals by junior Vanja Dobrnjac, sophomore Vicente Arbelaez, redshirt freshman Lucius Soller, and freshmen Alejando Beneyto Sanchez, Alin Fatu, Matei Palcau, and Xavier Sarda Marti.
The Gamecock women will face a similarly tough field in Louisiana. Jacksonville State is one of 18 total programs sending student-athletes to Baton Rouge. The other schools being represented include Alabama, Auburn, Louisiana, Louisiana Tech, LSU, McNeese, Mississippi State, New Orleans, Nicholls, Northwestern State, Ole Miss, Samford, Southern Miss, Troy, Tulane, UAB, and UL Monroe.
Several members of the JSU women's squad will be making the trip to the Bayou State this weekend, such as junior Dariana Prato, sophomores Romane Mosse, Zuzana Pavelekova, Anna Syrova, and Ella Tuomela, and freshmen Irene Artigas, Polina Ramenskaja, and Serafima Shastova.
Mosse, Ramenskaja, Shastova, and Syrova are in the singles main draw at LSU, and two doubles teams (Artigas/Ramenskaja and Mosse/Shastova) are in the main draw for doubles as well.
Qualifying draws for both invites start Thursday and main draw play will begin on Friday. Action will continue throughout the weekend, with finals set for Tuesday in both events.
