JACKSONVILLE - Jacksonville State's volleyball team (20-5, 8-4) swept Stetson (13-10, 4-7) in straight sets on the final full weekend of volleyball at The Pete Mathews Coliseum for the 2022 season. The Gamecocks recovered from a five-set loss on Friday to Florida Gulf Coast to capture their 20th win of the year and their 13th sweep.
"I love the way we bounced back tonight after losing a close match last night," JSU head coach
Todd Garvey said after the win. "I thought our energy and focus was great. We served fantastic and played great team defense."
Jax State's offense and defense both starred in the Saturday match. The offense struck a solid .362 hit percentage, tallied 46 kills, and racked up five aces.
JSU's defense recorded 45 digs and six blocks to vault the Gamecocks over the Hatters. The Gamecocks also held Stetson to just a .152 hit percentage.
The Gamecocks dominated the opening set. Jax State jumped out to a quick 13-4 lead at the midway point of the set and continued to roll, capturing the win by a score of 25-14.
JSU kept their foot on the pedal through the second set grabbing another convincing victory. The Gamecocks won in another dominating fashion in the second set 25-14 as redshirt sophomore
Courtney Glotzbach and graduate transfer
Sophie Riemersma accounted for eight kills apiece through the first two sets.
Stetson kept things tight in the third set by jumping out to an early 8-6 lead over the Gamecocks. Graduate transfer
Claire Ochs recorded a kill late in the set to grant the Gamecocks the victory 25-20.
Riemersma led the Gamecocks with 13 kills in the match on 23 attempts. Glotzbach followed with 11 kills on 21 swings. Glotzbach led JSU with a .524 hit percentage followed closely by Riemersma who hit .522. Fifth year senior
Katie Montgomery and Senior
Kylee Quigley both recorded two aces each to lead the Gamecocks' servers. Riemersma had four blocks in the match to lead all Gamecocks and Montgomery had three blocks respectively.
Ochs had a convincing 37 assists against Stetson. Senior
Erin Carmichael tallied 14 digs to lead Jax State. Sophomore
Brooklyn Schiffli totaled eight digs in the match.
"Claire did a great job of spreading the ball around and getting everyone involved offensively," Garvey said. "We are tough to stop when our offense is clicking."
Two reserve Gamecocks had the chance to participate in Saturday's match. Freshman
Luci Wilkinson saw action for the eighth time this year in the third set while senior
Anna Nelson, who was cleared to play earlier this week after recovering from a hip injury, played for the first time in 2022.
Jacksonville State will travel to Nashville to face Lipscomb next Friday night. The Gamecocks will then make the trip to Clarksville, Tenn., to face Austin Peay on Saturday evening. Both ASUN showdowns will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
