JACKSONVILLE – Seniors showed out in a big way for Jacksonville State volleyball (23-5, 11-4) in their Senior Night sweep (25-10, 25-13, 25-22) of North Alabama (13-14, 3-12) on Friday night.
"I couldn't be prouder of the seniors and the team," JSU head coach
Todd Garvey said after the win. "Tonight was a special night. All the other seniors walking out with Lena kind of signifies what this team is about. We've always been about family first and about playing for the person next to you instead of playing for yourself. That was a cool moment."
Fifth-year outside hitter
Lena Kindermann had 19 kills and hit .516 and graduate transfer
Sophie Riemersma ended up with 12 kills on a .321 clip. They were far from JSU's only standouts, however.
Graduate transfer setter
Claire Ochs finished with 42 assists, two aces, and six digs while
Zoe Gonzales and
Katie Montgomery added six kills each. Seniors
Erin Carmichael and
Kylee Quigley had 13 and 11 digs respectively, with the latter tallying two aces. Senior defensive specialist
Anna Nelson also posted six digs and one ace.
Jacksonville State wasted no time pulling away from UNA in the opening set. The Gamecocks used an 8-1 start to jump on top and continued to pile it on, hitting .531 throughout a decisive 25-10 first-set win.
The second set was nearly a mirror image of the first. After a mostly back-and-forth start, an 11-2 spurt midway through the frame handed a plethora of momentum to JSU. Garvey's squad kept at it, building a double-digit lead before taking a 25-13 second set.
Set no. three was the tightest all night. The North Alabama defense registered numerous blocks to begin the set and had JSU hitting .000 for most of the interval. UNA led by as many as eight at 20-12, but a ferocious comeback by the Gamecocks resulted in a 13-2 scoring run to clinch the three-set triumph.
"The first two sets we were clicking on offense and defense and putting on a show," Garvey said. "The third set, we got off to a little slow of a start but the way we finished was incredible. We've learned how to fight through adversity this year and couldn't be more proud of them for pulling it out the way they did."
JSU out-hit UNA .372 to .116 in the win. The Gamecocks had 54 kills versus just 20 by the Lions. Although North Alabama had more blocks, Jax State ended up with significantly more aces, assists, digs, and points.
Also of note, redshirt sophomore
Courtney Glotzbach had a four-kill outing and topped 400 career kills in the win.
