KENNESAW, Ga. – A shutout from
Kat Carter and a clutch hit from
Sidney Wagnon lifted the Jacksonville State softball team to a 1-0 win in the final game of its ASUN Opening series on Sunday.
Carter was dealing from the start for the Gamecocks (16-11, 1-2 ASUN), who avenged a pair of losses to the Owls (9-14, 2-1 ASUN) on Saturday. The true freshman didn't allow an extra base hit and scattered four singles over her seven innings in the circle. The Spring Hill, Tenn., native faced just two batters over the minimum and improved to 9-6 after throwing her fourth shutout of the year and her 12
th complete game in 14 starts.
Wagnon gave Carter and the Gamecocks the only run they would need in the second inning. The senior from Moody, Ala., delivered a two-out single into right field that scored
Karsen Mosley from second and gave JSU the first and only run of the game.
Mosley led off the frame with a single off the glove of third baseman Taylor Cates and moved to second on
Hannah Buffington's one-out single. Wagnon's shot through the right side drover her in.
Carter outdueled KSU ace Melanie Bennett (7-7), who lost the game after giving up a run on seven hits in seven innings of work. She struck out nine, walked one and made an error in the field.
Mosley and Wagnon were each 2-for-3 to lead the Gamecocks at the plate.
The Gamecocks will return home on Monday for a 12 p.m. CT game against Dartmouth. JSU students and all fans ages 18 and under get in for free.
