JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State volleyball returns home this weekend to host the 2022 JSU Invitational against non-conference foes Auburn, Jackson State, and Southern Miss. The Gamecocks will try to pad their resume even more with victories on Friday and Saturday against three quality programs from the Magnolia and Yellowhammer States.
Three matches will be played each day of the invitational in Jacksonville. JSU will open the tournament with a matchup versus Jackson State at 10 a.m. Friday. Following Auburn-Southern Miss at 1:30, the Gamecocks will take part in the Day 1 nightcap as they meet Southern Miss at 7 p.m.
Action continues on Saturday morning when Auburn and Jackson State face off at 10 a.m. After an intrastate bout between Jackson State and Southern Miss, Jacksonville State will duke it out with Auburn at 6 p.m. Saturday in the invitational finale.
Admission to the JSU Invitational at the Pete Mathews Coliseum is free of charge. Each of Jacksonville State's matches will be broadcast on ESPN+, and live stats are available at JSUGamecockSports.com.
Jacksonville State (10-0) aims to extend its historic opening to the 2022 campaign in this weekend's JSU Invitational. The Gamecocks' fantastic beginning to non-conference play marks their best such start in the program's Division I history. In addition, their ten-game non-conference win streak is now a program-best as well.
However, JSU will face some of the toughest competition it will see all season this weekend. Jackson State (1-7) is a perennial power in the SWAC coming off a 17-win 2021 season, while Auburn (8-0) and Southern Miss (7-2) have already picked up several impressive victories to start the new year.
Earlier this week, graduate transfer setter Claire Ochs netted Jacksonville State itsfirst ASUN Weekly Award of the season when she took home Setter of the Week honors after finishing with 111 assists, 30 digs, ten kills, three services aces, and one block in the Gamecock Classic. Ochs was not the only standout performer. Fifth year outside hitter Lena Kindermann had 43 kills and hit .360, and fifth-year middle blocker Katie Montgomery hit .431 with 31 kills in that home invitational. Senior Kylee Quigley led the team with seven aces while senior Erin Carmichael and sophomore Brooklyn Schiffli had five and four respectively. Carmichael also led the team with 43 digs, and outside-hitter-turned-middle-blocker Courtney Glotzbach ended up with eight total blocks at the Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Through ten matches, several Gamecocks find themselves among the ASUN's best in certain statistics. Quigley is currently tops in the ASUN in service aces (20) and aces per set (0.67) while Montgomery is third in the conference with a hit percentage of .429. Kindermann is just four spots behind her with a mark of .340, fourth in the league in kills per set (3.74), and fifth in points per set (4.03). Ochs is third in the ASUN in assists per set (10.65) and Gonzales still ranks third with 1.14 blocks per set.
Jax State is 2-7 all-time against Auburn, with their last meeting coming in the 2014 War Eagle Invitational in which JSU lost 3-0. The Gamecocks are 12-0 versus Jackson State- and defeated the Tigers 3-0 in their last showdown in 2018- and are 1-1 in matchups with Southern Miss. JSU topped Southern Miss 3-1 in last season's JSU Invitational as part of a 3-0 weekend with victories over Nicholls, South Alabama, and the aforementioned Golden Eagles. Jacksonville State's last loss in the JSU Invitational came in a 3-1 setback against Troy on Aug. 30, 2019.
