Men's Tennis Sending Eleven to ITA Fall Regionals

AUBURN, Ala. – Gamecock men's tennis looks to develop further on a big stage this weekend as the program travels to Auburn for the ITA Fall Regionals. That event at the Yarbrough Tennis Center will take place Thurs., Oct. 12 through Tues., Oct. 17.
Action in Auburn starts on Thursday with Singles Qualification Rounds 1 and 2 and Qualies will continue on Friday morning. Shortly thereafter the First Round (Round of 64) of Singles and Doubles play begins, with matches ongoing through Tuesday's Finals. The singles and doubles finalists from this regional event will earn an automatic berth to the ITA National Fall Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif., which will be held from Nov. 3-6.
"We're excited to compete again and hopefully improve and take a step closer to the peak," head coach Trey Morris said. "The biggest thing for us, though, is that we're not looking to prove anything. Don't get me wrong, winning regionals is a massive accomplishment and is something we're aiming for this week, but we know who we are and what we are about and our goals are far bigger than just winning a regional event."
Jacksonville State's men opened their Fall 2023 slate at home with the mid-September Jax State Invite and improved upon that outing their last time out. Several Gamecocks made the trip to the Samford Invitational, held Sept. 29-Oct. 1 in Homewood, where the squad totaled 15 wins against the likes of North Alabama, UAB, and the host Bulldogs. That same weekend, Ivan Marrero Curbelo highlighted Jax State's trip to the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga., by advancing to the Semifinal Round of the Singles Red Draw bracket. Marrero Curbelo, Alin Fatu, and Lucius Soller all impressed in Georgia against top-tier competition.
"Practice has gone great since our last events," Morris said. "These guys have been putting in shifts every single day. They are like a fine wine; they just seem to be aging really well and getting better and better. We're going down a really promising path at the moment and I'm very excited about that."
Now, the Red-and-White are set for a trip to the Plains for the ITA Fall Regionals. Seniors Liam Day, Vanja Dobrnjac, and Marrero Curbelo, junior Logan Haga, sophomores Matei Palcau, Xavier Sarda Marti, Fatu, and Soller, and freshmen Aman Dahiya, Marko Milosavljevic, and Zach Murphy will all be in action in the invite. Jacksonville State's representatives will meet top notch competitors from programs such as Alabama, Alabama State, Auburn, Louisiana, LSU, Mississippi State, North Alabama, Ole Miss, Samford, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Troy, Tulane, and UAB.
"I want our guys to leave everything on the table this week," Morris said. "We look to outwork and out-compete in everything we do, and nothing is different about that at Regionals. This is all about the big picture and the process. Of course, we're looking for wins this weekend and playing for trophies, but we're also here to get better."
