Gamecocks Return Home to Play Mercer

JACKSONVILLE – After spending two weeks away from the friendly confines, Jacksonville State men's tennis returns home on Wednesday for a non-conference match against Mercer. That test at Pete Mathews Coliseum will begin around 1 p.m. at the JSU Tennis Courts.
The Gamecocks (5-5) have not seen the courts since a 6-1 loss at Troy on Feb. 18. Their rivalry loss to the Trojans was closer than the final score might indicate, but Jacksonville State simply could not grasp opportunities to take control of the match in Pike County. Now, Jax State will look to rebound at home against an experienced Bears (6-6) squad.
Mercer has played a strong non-conference slate, taking on the likes of Alabama, FGCU, and Kennesaw State. In spite of this, they have already nearly matched their win total of seven from last year. The Bears will enter Wednesday's match in Jacksonville winners of back-to-back showdowns versus Georgia College and Fairfield University. Mercer's only win over a Division I opponent came in a 6-1 triumph over Alabama A&M on Jan. 28.
Jacksonville State downed Mercer, 4-3, in the last meeting between the two programs. That match, played at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center in Macon, Ga., took place on March 3, 2021. The Gamecocks were set to host the Bears last Spring, but that contest in Calhoun County was postponed due to weather.
Admission to attend Wednesday's matches in Jacksonville is free of charge. Action will begin at 10 a.m. at the JSU Tennis Courts as the women host Mercer. They will also play Wallace State Community College on Wednesday afternoon, beginning around 1 p.m. Links to follow along with live stats for each of those contests will be provided at JSUGamecockSports.com.
