Women's Tennis Set for Wednesday Doubleheader
2/28/2023 10:28:00 AM | Women's Tennis
JACKSONVILLE – Following three straight road matches and 25 days away from the JSU Tennis Courts, Jacksonville State women's tennis finally returns home for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday. The Gamecocks will take on Mercer at 9 a.m. before meeting Wallace State Community College later in the afternoon.
"We are hoping the weather cooperates tomorrow," head coach Mike Mucci said. "Mercer is always great competition to play in non-conference and we're grateful that Wallace State was able to reschedule from an earlier date so we can get some extra work in. We need to be ready to go from the first ball and continue working on the things we've been talking about since September."
Jax State (7-2) claimed a pair of quality wins in tough road environments to close out the month of February. The Gamecocks scored their first ever win over Troy with a 4-3 victory on Feb. 18, then dropped a competitive 5-2 heartbreaker at Georgia Southern three days later. Fortunately, the Red-and-White responded in a big way with a 5-2 triumph at Florida A&M on Friday to get back in the win column.
After spending nearly a month on the road Mucci's squad will head back home this week for three important matches, starting with a doubleheader on Wednesday against the Bears (6-4) and Lions.
Mercer, like their men's team, have played some strong opponents early in the season. MU fell in their first two matches at Kennesaw State and Florida State before tallying back-to-back Division I victories over Alabama A&M and Georgia State. They enter Wednesday morning's matchup on a two-match winning streak after defeating Georgia College, 4-3, and Lipscomb, 6-1.
Wallace State's women are a power on the NJCAA circuit and consistently compete for Alabama Community College Conference titles. The Lions finished as the ACCC runners-up in 2022 and advanced to the NJCAA Division I National Championships, where they placed 12th overall out of 26 teams. WSCC, who won their conference title in 2021, has not officially started their 2023 campaign.
Jacksonville State dropped their most recent meeting with Mercer, 5-2, on March 3, 2021. The two sides were slated to play in Jacksonville last Spring, but inclement weather forced a postponement. The Gamecocks cruised by Wallace State, 6-1, last February.
Admission to attend Wednesday's matches in Jacksonville is free of charge. Action will begin at 9 a.m. at the JSU Tennis Courts. The men will also be playing as they taking on Mercer at 1 p.m. Links to follow along with live stats for each of those contests will be provided at JSUGamecockSports.com.
