JACKSONVILLE – Women's tennis posted a pair of sweeps in Wednesday's doubleheader at the JSU Tennis Courts. Jacksonville State downed Mercer, 7-0, in their first win over the Bears in a decade, then cruised by Wallace State Community College later in the afternoon.
"Today was the most complete match we've played this season," head coach
Mike Mucci said after the wins. "To beat a quality opponent like Mercer 7-0 says a lot about the hard work we've been putting in on and off the court. Our doubles was much more crisp and had better energy."
Jax State (9-2) dominated their non-conference match with Mercer (6-5) from the opening serve. After splitting the first two doubles flights, the freshman tandem of
Irene Artigas and
Serafima Shastova rolled to a decisive 6-3 victory to give the opening point to the Gamecocks.
They picked up right where they left off in singles action. Shastova (7-5, 6-4),
Anna Syrova (7-5, 6-3),
Polina Ramenskaja (6-1, 6-3),
Dariana Prato (7-6 [7-4], 6-3), and
Zuzana Pavelekova (7-5, 6-4) all earned two-set triumphs while
Romane Mosse (4-6, 6-4, 6-3) added a three-setter for good measure.
Those strong performances helped Mucci's squad earn their eighth win of the year and secure the program's first over the Bears since a 5-2 victory on Feb. 19, 2013.
As expected, the Gamecocks raced past junior college power Wallace State on Wednesday afternoon. Syrova and
Ella Tuomela (6-1),
Kennedi Jones and Pavelekova (6-2), and Artigas and Prato (6-1) each picked up doubles decisions to start the match.
Singles play was even more dominant than the Mercer affair. Ramenskaja (6-1, 6-3), Prato (6-3, 6-2), Tuomela (6-0, 6-0), Pavelekova (6-1, 6-1), Artigas (6-0, 6-0), and Jones (6-1, 6-3) all had two-set wins in a quick meeting with the Lions.
Jones, a sophomore from Macon, Ga., earned her first playing time of the season against WSCC. The second-year Gamecock produced, finishing with victories in doubles and singles action.
"It feels great to be 9-2, but we will get right back at it to prepare for a good Chattanooga team," Mucci said."
Jacksonville State women's tennis will play two more matches this weekend. The Gamecocks will host Chattanooga in Calhoun County on Saturday, with first-serve set for 11 a.m. Then, Jax State will make the drive north to Huntsville on Sunday morning for a 10 a.m. showdown with Alabama A&M.
