JACKSONVILLE - Jacksonville State will host defending national champion and No. 3 Ole Miss on Tuesday night in its last tune up before opening ASUN Conference action this weekend against Queens (N.C.).
First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Tickets are available online at JSUGamecockSports.com. The midweek outing will be streamed on ESPN+ and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
The Gamecocks, amid a 12-game homestand, will face their fourth Southeastern Conference opponent of the season. The Rebels are the highest-ranked opponent to visit Jacksonville since Georgia's 2019 trip to town as the No. 8 team in the country. Jax State opened the season with a three-game set at Georgia, traveled to Alabama on February 28 and hosted Auburn last Wednesday night in front of the second-largest crowd (1,988) at Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium. Jax State turned in its second series win of the season last weekend with doubleheader sweep of South Alabama last Saturday. JSU blanked the Jaguars, 4-0, to start the twinbill and capped off the day with an 11-9 series-clinching win.
The Rebels will bring an overall record of 14-2 as they prep for their first Southeastern Conference weekend in Nashville, Tennessee against Vanderbilt. UM returns 18 members from last season's club that made the improbable run to the national championship as one of the last teams selected into the 2022 NCAA Baseball Tournament. The Rebels are coming off a three-game series sweep of Purdue out of the Big 10.
Jax State and Ole Miss will be meeting for the seventh time on the baseball diamond and the first time in midweek competition. The Rebels have claimed all six previous meetings and all have been in Oxford, Mississippi. UM is making its first trip to Jacksonville. UM and Jax State met in the opening round of the 2014 NCAA Oxford Regional with the Rebels posting a 12-2 win. The two clubs met twice in the 2019 edition of the NCAA Oxford Regional. UM dispatched the Gamecocks to the elimination round of the bracket with a 16-2 decision. JSU bounced-back to knock off Illinois and Clemson to reach the championship round of the 2019 NCAA Oxford Regional. The Rebels put together a 19-4 win to claim the regional and move on to the super regional round. Ole Miss swept Jax State in a three-game series during the 2002 season.
Senior outfielder T.J. Reeves enters the week near the top of the ASUN Conference in total hits with 26 through 16 games. Reeves has a hit in 12-of-the-16 games this season, including multiple hits in 10 games. He has turned in seven games with two hits, a pair of three-hit games and established a career high in hits for a game with four vs. Bradley on March 5.
Junior Mason Maners has put together a string of 28 straight games of reaching base, which dates back to the last 12 games of the 2023 season. In the 16 games this season, he has reached base 34 total times. Over the last 25 games, Maners has hit in 23-of-the-28 games and has two or more hits in 12 of the 28 games dating back to the Eastern Kentucky series last season. Maners' streak ranks fourth in the country behind Brando Comia of Illinois' 52-game on-base streak spanning the last two seasons.
The Gamecocks will send junior Jake Peppers to the mound against Ole Miss. Peppers turned in one of his best outings as a Gamecock last Wednesday against the Tigers of Auburn. The Geraldine, Alabama native tossed a career-high 5.1 innings in his second start of the season. Peppers scattered five AU hits and did not allow a run. He finished with five strikeouts in the outing.
The Rebels will counter with Jordan Vera, a freshman from Miami, Florida. He will be making his first start after five appearances in relief for UM this season.
