JACKSONVILLE - After knocking off third-ranked Ole Miss in the midweek, Jacksonville State shifts its focus to the ASUN conference slate with the first of 10 weekends of league action, hosting ASUN newcomer Queens in a weekend series on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.
The series with the Royals begins on Friday at 6p.m. The two clubs will continue the series with a Saturday evening showdown at 6 p.m. and wrap up the ASUN weekend series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets are available online at JSUGamecockSports.com. All Jax State students and fans 18 years old and younger are admitted free. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+ and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
Jax State (7-10) and Queens will be meeting for the first time on the baseball diamond. The Royals, based out of Charlotte, North Carolina are making the transition from NCAA Division II to the Division I level. Queens was a member of the South Atlantic Conference prior to the jump. The Gamecocks enter conference play riding a three-game winning streak after sweeping a doubleheader last Saturday against South Alabama and Tuesday's win over the Rebels. The Royals begin ASUN competition at 3-13 overall.
It all begins with starting pitching for the Gamecocks. Over the span of the last four games, Jax State has started strong on the mound. Going back to the series with South Alabama and Tuesday's win over Ole Miss, JSU starters have accumulated an earned run average of 1.29 over 21 innings-pitched, allowed 14 hits, three runs and three earned runs. The starters have recorded 28 strikeouts, issued just five walks and the opposition is hitting .189.
The Gamecocks will stick with the same pitching plan that has been in place the prior four weekends of the season. Sophomore AJ Causey will start the series opener on Friday, followed by Tanner Jones taking the mound on Saturday. Freshman Eli Zielinski gets the starting nod in the series finale on Sunday. Causey, who made an appearance out of the bullpen on Tuesday to close out the win over Ole Miss, has posted a team-high 29 strikeouts in the 25.0 innings-work. Jones will be looking to mirror his outing against the Jaguars of USA last weekend. He established a career-high seven innings pitched and finished with a career-best nine strikeouts in Jax State's 4-0 shutout. Zielinski has collected three wins in the Sunday slot and has allowed just nine runs in 18.1 innings over four starts.
Senior outfielder T.J. Reeves enters the week near the top of the ASUN Conference in total hits with 27 through 17 games. Reeves has a hit in 13-of-the-17 games this season, including multiple hits in 10 games. He has turned in seven games with two hits, a pair of three-hit games and established a career high in hits for a game with four vs. Bradley on March 5.
Junior Mason Maners has put together a string of 29 straight games of reaching base, which dates back to the last 12 games of the 2023 season. In the 17 games this season, he has reached base 36 total times. Over the last 29 games, Maners has hit in 24-of-the-29 games and has two or more hits in 12 of the 29 games dating back to the Eastern Kentucky series last season. Maners' streak ranks fourth in the country behind Brandon Comia of Illinois' 53-game on-base streak spanning the last two seasons.
Freshman Bear Madliak has been on a tear from the leadoff spot. The catcher from Carrollton, Georgia is 10-for-20 (.500) since being inserted in the top spot in the lineup against South Alabama on March 10. Madliak has four doubles, scored six runs and registered five RBI dating back to the start of the USA series. In the first nine games of Jax State's 12-game homestand, Madliak is hitting .429 (12-28.).
The weekend series with the Royals will wrap up Jax State's 12-game homestand. The Gamecocks will hit the road for the fist time in the month of March on Tuesday, March 21 with a midweek trip to Montgomery, Alabama to face Alabama State. Next weekend, Jax State will face Bellarmine in Louisville, Kentucky for its first ASUN road series.
