JACKSONVILLE – Gamecock men's tennis scored a huge conference win at Eastern Kentucky on Friday and will enjoy a home match on Monday afternoon in their league home opener. Jacksonville State will play host to visiting North Alabama with first serve slated for 2 p.m.
"UNA is one of the teams in the region that we were fortunate enough to see in the fall and I think that they're a talented group," associate head coach Trey Morris said. "They've got a new coaching staff that is doing a great job and has the guys in a good place to come out and compete, so we're expecting nothing short of a battle.
"Now that we're in conference play, we know that every match is going to be a battle," Morris said. "We still feel that, at the end of the day, there's not a team in the conference that we don't have the quality to beat. It's just whether or not we step up and compete that day."
Jax State (9-6, 1-0) rolled to a conference-opening triumph in the Bluegrass State, downing the Colonels 5-2. A quick start helped Morris' men earn the doubles point before singles wins by Vicente Arbelaez, Alin Fatu, Matei Palcau, and Lucius Soller clinched the match victory. Following that road classic, Jacksonville State returns to the JSU Tennis Courts for a Spring Break test against UNA (4-6, 0-1).
The Lions played regional powers like Middle Tennessee State, New Orleans, and Samford prior to starting their ASUN slate. North Alabama competed well last Saturday in Louisville, Ky., but fell short in a 5-2 setback at Bellarmine. A veteran team will search for their first league triumph of 2023 in Monday's matchup.
The two Yellowhammer State programs have met four times over the past four seasons. Jax State picked up wins in each of those meetings, including a 5-2 victory in Calhoun County last March.

Jacksonville State tennis will hit the road next weekend for a pair of conference matches along the east coast. After playing at Queens in Charlotte, N.C., on Friday afternoon, the Gamecocks head to Lynchburg, Va., next Sunday to play Liberty. Jax State's next home match will take place on March 31 against North Florida.
