JACKSONVILLE – Following back-to-back road wins to start league play, Jacksonville State women's tennis returns home on Monday for their ASUN Conference home opener versus North Alabama. That Spring Break showdown, which was postponed due to extreme cold weather on Sunday, will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the JSU Tennis Courts.
"UNA is always a great rivalry match and we are excited to finally be back at home after two long road trips," head coach Mike Mucci said. "We are hoping we can carry the momentum we have built over the last two weeks into what is always a challenging matchup."
Jax State (12-3, 2-0) thumped Eastern Kentucky in Friday's match in Richmond, Ky. The Gamecocks dominated doubles play and never looked back, tallying six two-set singles wins in the Bluegrass State. Now, Mucci's squad comes home to play a competitive Lions (6-8, 1-1) squad in Calhoun County.
North Alabama played a strong non-conference slate, taking on perennial powers in Ole Miss, Samford, and UAB. They dropped a late-February test at Troy, 6-1, but have since won five of their last seven outings. UNA fell 6-1 at Central Arkansas on March 10 but rebounded at home with a 5-2 win over Bellarmine on Thursday.
The two in-state foes have met five times in the last eight seasons with Jax State taking three of those meetings. The road team came out on top in four of those battles before the Gamecocks claimed a 5-2 win in Jacksonville on March 17, 2022. UNA claimed the doubles point last year, but singles wins by Kennedi Jones, Romane Mosse, Dariana Prato, Anna Syrova, and Zuzana Pavelekova helped secure a big ASUN win.
