JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – The Jacksonville State women's golf team lowered its score each round of this week's Georgia State Invitational, wrapping up play in the event on Tuesday.
The Gamecocks shot a final-round 298 after carding rounds of 310 and 301 on Monday to finish 11
th in the event held on the par-72, 6,170-yard Rivermont Golf Club.
Senior
Claire Vermette shot Jax State's best round of the 54-hole tournament on Tuesday, signing for a 1-under 71 that capped a total score of 221. The St. Petersburg, Fla., native and lone upperclassman on the Gamecocks' roster climbed seven spots up the 89-player leaderboard on Tuesday alone.
"This week was a challenge," head coach Robbie Fields said. "I'm proud of our girls for fighting through difficult conditions and a long day yesterday. We're figuring out a lot of areas to improve both mentally and physically, so we'll work to get that straightened out for a quick turnaround."
She opened her tournament with a 1-over 73 on Monday morning but rallied after an afternoon 77 to shoot her eighth round under par this season. She finished the tournament 5-over, while Boston College's Stephany Kim claimed medalist honors at 2-under and one of just five players to finish under par.
Vermette penciled in eight total birdies during the tournament, including five on Tuesday. She tied for the ninth-most birdies in the field during the tournament. She also played Rivermont's par-five holes at 2-under, tied for the fourth-best in the field.
True freshman
Ebby Somers and redshirt freshman
Aaron Whitley each turned in totals of 230 to tie for 46
th for Jax State and both used a lot of pars to get to their totals. The duo had 37 pars apiece, while Somers was among the best n the field on the par 4s by playing them at 1-over for the tournament.
Somers, a native of Valdosta, Ga., opened play with a 78 before shooting back-to-back rounds of 76. Osprey, Fla., native Whitley answered a first-round 82 with a second-round 73 and a final-round 75.
Sophomore
Paula Perez Cubinas tied for 66
th after rounds of 80-78-76 gave her a 234, while freshman
Anna Ymbern Quinoa also shot 234 and tied for 66
th with scores of 79-75-80.
The Gamecocks have just one regular-season tournament remaining before the ASUN Conference Championship on April 16-18. Jax State will play in East Carolina's Ironwood Invitational on Monday at the Ironwood Golf & Country Club in Greenville, N.C.
