JACKSONVILLE – Gamecock beach volleyball will round out the regular season this weekend with two days of action in Clarksville, Tenn. Jacksonville State will travel to Austin Peay on Friday and Saturday to take part in the Govs Beach Bash.
"We've tried out a few different pairing options recently and are looking to finish the regular season with competitiveness and cohesion," interim head coach Michael Haars said. "Going into a strong conference tournament, we're excited about the upcoming event and looking forward to a tough challenge against some strong opponents."
Jax State (0-13-3) had last week off after participating in the UAB Beach Classic on March 31 and Apr. 1. The Gamecocks competed well but came up short in Birmingham, suffering losses to UL Monroe, Austin Peay, Mercer, and UAB. This week, Haars' squad will head north for their final regular season tune-up against a pair of familiar foes.
The Gamecocks open this weekend's event with a 2 p.m. showdown versus the host Governors (12-10) on Friday afternoon. That will mark the second meeting this year between the former Ohio Valley Conference foes after APSU swept Jax State on March 31 at UAB. Immediately after, Jacksonville State will take on Chattanooga (12-10) in a rematch of their March 10 pairing in the Huntingdon Beach Bash. Friday's finale will begin around 4 p.m. in the Volunteer State. The Red-and-White will have two more matches on Saturday, playing APSU at 10 a.m. and UTC at noon.
Austin Peay has had a bit of an up-and-down 2023 campaign. The Governors split decisions for the first two weeks of the season before winning nine straight matches beginning in mid-March. A veteran APSU squad swept the Governors Beach Challenge and EKU Beach Tournament before downing Jax State, 5-0, at UAB two weeks ago. They have lost their last five, however, heading into this weekend's invite at the Govs Beach Volleyball Complex.
Chattanooga has shined in spurts this Spring. The Mocs started a three-game winning streak with their win over the Gamecocks in mid-March and, after losing two road matches at UT Martin, produced a four-game winning streak later that month. They return to their home state this weekend after dropping consecutive contests last week at North Alabama.
Jacksonville State trails the all-time series with Austin Peay, 11-2. The Gamecocks defeated the Governors in 2017 and 2021 but have lost the last five meetings. The Mocs, on the other hand, are 7-1 against Jax State since 2021. The Red-and-White posted their lone victory on Apr. 30, 2021, but have lost five in a row.
Several Gamecocks will look to get back in the win column in Clarksville. Freshman Luci Wilkinson has a team-best five victories on court one this Spring and Michigan State transfer Gracie Danzinger is close behind with four wins. In addition, sophomore Brooklyn Schiffli, who was voted Team MVP at the inaugural Gamecock Choice Awards on Wednesday night, will try to add to her seven career results in the sand.
Following this weekend's Govs Beach Bash, Jacksonville State beach volleyball will take part in the Conference-USA Tournament. Their first league event as a C-USA member will be held Apr. 27-30 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
