TUNICA, Miss. – The duo of
Erik Jansson and
Santiago Bailleres paced the Jacksonville State men's golf team at the Tunica National Intercollegiate.
Jansson, a junior from Vasteras, Sweden, and Bailleres, a sophomore from Carrientes, Argentina, both posted two scores under par and finished in the top 10 to lead the Gamecocks to fifth place in the event. They posted a final round 289 to cap a 54-hole 878 on the par-72, 7,204-yard Tunica National Course.
Jansson tied for seventh in the 71-player field with a 2-under score of 214, while Bailleres tied for ninth after signing for a 1-under 215. Both had under par rounds to open the two-day event on Monday morning and also posted scores under par in Tuesday's final round.
Jansson used his final-round 69 to jump six spots on the leaderboard on the final day to get to his 215 and into seventh place. He opened his tournament with a 2-under 70 on Monday morning and then carded a 75 in the afternoon round to get him in position for a final-day run. He made four birdies and an eagle on Tuesday, including a 3-under back nine to close the tournament.
Bailleres played his front nine on Tuesday at 3-under to set up his 1-under final round. His opening-round 69 and second-round 75 on Monday put him in contention with Tuesday's final round to play. He played Tunica National's par-4 holes at 1-under during the week and made 11 total birdies.
Redshirt freshman Richardo Matho tied for 35
th for the Gamecocks with a 54-hole score of 224. The native of Argentina signed for back-to-back rounds of 75 on Monday before shooting a 74 in Tuesday's final round, a day that included four birdies.
Senior
Ross Napier totaled a 229 during the tournament to tie for 48
th, using a final-round 77 close his final regular-season tournament as a Gamecock. He opened with a 78 on Monday morning and then bounced back with an afternoon 74.
Sophomore
Ryley Heath tied for 54
th after shooting a 231 that was capped by his final-round 75. He opened his tournament with a first-round 76 before shooting 80 in Monday's afternoon round.
Redshirt sophomore
Gabriel Restrepo and redshirt freshman
David Melichar each competed as an individual in the event. Restrepo (76-78-77) tied for 54
th with a 231, while Melichar's 239 (81-79-79) tied him for 68
th.
The Gamecocks will conclude their schedule next week, when they travel to Mobile, Ala., for the 2023 ASUN Championship. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be played at Magnolia Grove on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail on April 25-27.
