FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Jacksonville State beach volleyball will become the first squad in program history to compete in a Conference USA postseason tournament when they travel to the Sunshine State this weekend to take part in the C-USA Beach Volleyball Championship. The sixth-seeded Gamecocks will open the tourney with a Thursday morning match against three-seed Tulane.
"We're excited about playing in the conference tournament this week," interim head coach Michael Haars said. "We know we'll be playing against our strongest opponents yet, but we're looking to be competitive in Fort Lauderdale."
Jax State (0-17-3) had last weekend off after finishing the regular season in mid-April's Govs Beach Bash at Austin Peay. The Gamecocks fell in their four pairings against APSU and Chattanooga but rebounded strongly in the invite's last showdown. Although they suffered a 3-2 setback to the Mocs in the regular season finale, the Red-and-White claimed two big victories to put some pressure on UTC. Gracie Danzinger and Isabelle Fuell picked up a 21-19, 21-19, win on court two and the tandem of Carley Lynch and Brooklyn Schiffli posted a 21-19, 21-18, triumph in the third flight to finish play in the Volunteer State.
Following their impressive finish against a stout Chattanooga team, Jacksonville State is hoping that momentum can be carried over into this weekend's C-USA Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Thursday morning's meeting with Tulane (22-8) will mark beach volleyball's first match against the Green Wave in six years. The Gamecocks last played the national power in 2017, where Jax State was swept in all three showdowns. The latest pairing took place in the Palmetto Invitational in Columbia, S.C., rounding out a trio of neutral site matches against Tulane.
Several members of the squad have had impressive outings this season. Danzinger and Luci Wilkinson lead the team with five wins each and Fuell is just behind them with four. In addition, returners Lynch and Kylee Quigley have also earned three victories each in 2023.
The match on Thursday against Tulane will begin at 9:30 a.m. CT at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park. The winner of that important test will meet second-seeded Florida Atlantic later that afternoon, while the loser will look to fight off elimination on Friday morning. Matches in the double-elimination tournament will continue throughout the weekend, with the Conference USA champion being crowed on Saturday.
