FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Gamecock beach volleyball was swept by three-seed Tulane on Thursday morning in the opening match of the 2023 Conference USA Beach Volleyball Championship. Following that decisive loss to the Green Wave, sixth-seeded Jacksonville State will look to keep its season alive with an upset against top-seeded Florida International in Friday morning's elimination game in south Florida.
The Green Wave (23-9) rolled to a quick first round victory over Jax State (0-18-3). Tulane posted five consecutive two-set triumphs and clinched the win with a 21-11, 21-9, result on court five. Jacksonville State's tandem of Gracie Danzinger and Isabelle Fuell was the most consistent pair on the day, finishing with a combined 22 points in a 21-10, 21-12, setback in the second flight.
The Gamecocks will now take on the tournament's top seed, Florida International, at 8 a.m. CDT Friday morning. That showdown at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park will serve as the bracket's first elimination game.
FIU won the only previous meeting between the two current C-USA programs. The Panthers downed Jax State, 5-0, in the Battle on the Bay on March 25, 2017. That match was also a neutral site, non-conference affair that took place at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The winner of Friday morning's pairing will advance to play the winner of the UTEP-Tulane match at 12:30 p.m. CDT while the loser's run will end. Matches will continue throughout the double-elimination tournament before a champion is crowned on Saturday.
