ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Jacksonville State men's golf team is set to open its spring season on Monday, when the Gamecocks tee off in the World Golf Village Collegiate.
Â
Jax State is one of 19 teams competing in the two-day, 54-hole event that will be played on the par-72, 7,028-yard King & Bear Golf Course at the World Golf Village. The field will play 36 holes on Monday before the final round on Tuesday.
Â
Monday's two rounds will see the Gamecocks paired with Austin Peay, Purdue Fort Wayne and UT Martin.Â
Â
The Gamecocks look to start the spring on a solid note after a strong fall that was led by senior Erik Jansson. The Vasteras, Sweden, native and undisputed No. 1 in the Jax State lineup was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week four times after just five fall tournaments and got off to an impressive start to his senior campaign.
Â
Jansson signed for a round under par 14 times in his 15 fall rounds, shooting even in the other. His fall scoring average finished at 68.87 over 15 rounds, and he dropped his career scoring average to 71.79, ahead of Danny Willett's school record of 71.96 set from 2005-07. He also ran his career total for par or better rounds to 50, fourth-most by a player in Jax State history.
Â
Jansson won once and posted a 323-37-16 record against his competition in the fall. He will lead the Gamecocks in St. Augustine, while junior Ryley Heath will be penciled into the No. 2 spot in head coach Michael Brice's lineup. Heath, a native of Decatur, Ala., posted a scoring average of 74.1 in three fall events.
Â
Redshirt junior Gabriel Restrepo will play in the No. 3 position for Jax State in the spring opener. The native of Caracas, Venezuela, had a 72.7 stroke average in five fall tournaments and finished as good as sixth in the USF Invitational.
Â
Junior Santiago Bailleres will play in the No. 4 spot this week and will look to get his spring off to a strong start. The Chascomus, Argentina, native closed the fall with his best finish – 17th at the White Sands Bahamas Invitational.
Â
Redshirt freshman David Melichar will play in his second event as the Gamecocks' No. 5 man this week. The native of the Czech Republic made his debut in UAB's GMAC Invitational in September.Â
