MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Jax State track and field program returns to action this weekend as the team shifts to the outdoor portion of the 2024 schedule.
Â
The Gamecocks will compete in seven outdoor meets before the Conference USA championships in El Paso, Texas, May 10-12. The action begins at this weekend's Falcon Classic hosted by Montevallo on Friday and Saturday. Jax State rolls into the outdoor slate with lots of momentum following a strong indoor campaign.
Â
"There is a lot to be excited about after indoor season as it was a massive improvement from last year, stated head coach Jeremy Provence. "We had a program top 10 performance in every track event and in four of the seven field events, including three school records overall. This is a young group, and we are still learning how to consistently compete at this level. However, I am confident we will continue to see a lot of growth as we progress through the outdoor season."
Â
The 2024 outdoor schedule includes a balance of some highly competitive meets along with some shorter trips that will provide competitive opportunities for the entire roster. Friday's opener in Montevallo will feature in-state foes Samford, North Alabama and West Alabama as well as Auburn-Montgomery, Alabama-Huntsville and nearby Birmingham Southern.
Â
Following the Falcon Classic, the Gamecocks will take on seven-straight weeks of action with meets at UCF, UAB, Ole Miss, Berry College and Georgia Tech.
Â
"Montevallo is a good opener where we can get competition reps for everyone. At UCF, we will spend a majority of spring break in the Orlando area where we will have a couple days to relax and enjoy the time together as a team. This is a very competitive two-day meet where most everyone will get reps in their primary event and competing in multiple disciplines."
Â
"UAB and Ole Miss will serve similar purposes as the first couple meets. There will be an opportunity to see everyone in action at UAB and we will follow up with a highly competitive meet at Ole Miss. Georgia Tech and the Music City Classic are our last two meets of the season and will provide a competitive experience that should prepare us well for the CUSA Championships. We hope to see the group executing at a high level against a competitive field."
Â
Montevallo's Friday slate features the start of heptathlon action on the track along with the 10,000 meters. In the field, the heptathlon high jump and shot put will take place followed by the debut of the javelin event for the year.
Â
"I want to see us continue to compete hard and invest in the little things that make a difference. We have talent in several event groups, but talent alone isn't going to win at this level. We have to be committed to doing the things in and outside of practice that will help put us in a position to be successful down the road."
