JACKSONVILLE – After spending last weekend in Southern Illinois, the Jacksonville State baseball team will host Samford on Tuesday night to wrap up the season set with the Bulldogs before getting back on the road to open Conference USA action this weekend.
First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium. Tickets are available online at JaxStateSports.com. All Jax State students and fans 18 years old and younger are admitted free. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Eli Gold and Jim Case calling the action. The game will also be carried in the Gamecock Sports Network with Mike Parris on the play-by-play.
The Gamecocks will be looking to bounce-back from dropping the final non-conference series of the season last weekend against SIU. The Salukis rallied for a 7-6 win in 10 innings on Friday before the Gamecocks claimed a 9-6 win on Saturday. SIU finished the series with a 15-1 win on Sunday. Samford enters the contest at 12-7 overall after splitting a four-game series at Purdue last weekend.
The Bulldogs have strung together three consecutive wins over Jax State after sweeping the two games between the two clubs in 2023 and claiming a 7-3 decision in Birmingham on February 20. Tuesday's battle on the diamond will be the 90th meeting all-time between Jax State and Samford with the Gamecocks holding a 54-35 lead in the series.
Junior Logan Walters has made the adjustment to the Division I quickly with a team-best .320 batting average in the 14 games he has played in this season. His production came alive last week in Jax State's five-game week. Last week, Walters turned in a 9-for-21 week at the plate, including four doubles and a pair of home runs. The Petal, Mississippi native delivered seven RBI in five games. Junior Drew Collins, a transfer from Oakland University, has established himself as an offensive threat in the middle of the order and a hassle to deal with on the bases. Collins has bumped his average up to .289 overt the last week, including a .500 batting clip last week for the Gamecocks. Collins finished the week with eight hits, including his second home run as a Gamecock. Collins is a perfect 11-for-11 on the bases and swiped five bases in the five games last week.
Jax State will send Drew McCormick to the mound for his first career start in a Gamecock uniform. The Oxford, Alabama freshman has made two previous appearances on the mound in relief.
Following the Samford tilt, the Gamecocks get back on the road to start their inaugural CUSA season with a visit to Ruston, Louisiana to face Louisiana Tech in the conference opener. The series will start on Friday, March 22.
