DALLAS, Texas – Jacksonville State dropped a tough 5-4 decision to Dallas Baptist on Sunday afternoon at Horner Ballpark on the DBU campus.
The DBU win secures the series win after claiming another one-run, 10-9, win over the Gamecocks. Jax State posted a 12-11 win over the Patriots on Saturday.
It was a back-and-forth contest between the two clubs until DBU took a lead that it would nurse the rest of the way with three runs in the fourth inning. For the second consecutive day, the Jax State bullpen limited DBU offensively and pitched out of scoring chances for the Patriots. Junior Russell Derbyshire turned in one of his best outings of the season with 3.1 innings of work and allowed the final two DBU hits over the five frames. Sophomore Josh Sibley and freshman Colin Woodham recorded the final outs in the seventh and in the eighth with DBU runners on the base paths.
Jax State's offense was powered by junior Brennen Norton, who finished the day 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the setback. The Cullman, Alabama native torched DBU pitching in the three games with eight hits in 11 plate appearances, including three doubles and a pair of home runs in Jax State's Saturday win. Norton delivered six RBI in the series. Norton recorded the go-ahead RBI in the third inning and trimmed the DBU lead to a run with a two-out single in the sixth inning.
The Gamecocks had chances throughout the game to erase the deficit, but DBI got out of jams with stranding nine Gamecocks on the bases. Freshman Gabe Young walked with the bases loaded in the fifth inning for an RBI, while junior Drew Collins scored the first run of the contest after a leadoff walk in the first frame. Collins reached base three times with a pair of walks and hit-by-pitch. Sophomore Bear Madliak had a single on Sunday.
The Gamecocks will open their final homestand of the season on Tuesday with the final game of a three-game season series against the Blazers of UAB. It will be the rubber game of the series as Jax State claimed the first contest, 14-3 in March and fell to UAB in its visit to Young Memorial Field.
Jax State, fighting for one of the eight spots in the Conference USA Tournament, will host Middle Tennessee in the final CUSA home series of the season. The Gamecocks are one-game back of the Blue Raiders as the stretch run begins this weekend. The series begins on Friday at 6 p.m. on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium. Tickets for the homestand are available at JaxStateSports.com. All Jax State students and fans 18 years old and younger are admitted free.
All four games will be streamed on ESPN+ and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
