GAMECOCK STORY LINES
• Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium is 105 miles from the Georgia State campus but Tuesday's meeting with the Panthers will be the 28th meeting between the two programs. The Gamecocks hold a 17-10 lead in the series. Last season, the two clubs split a two-game set with the visitors winning each contest. The Panthers claimed an 8-5 decision in Jacksonville before the Gamecocks won 10-5 in Atlanta. Last season's two meetings was the first time the two schools have played against each other since the 2008 season. Both clubs were league mates as part of the Atlantic Sun Conference from 1999 to 2003. Jax State enters Tuesday's contest having won 7-of-the-last-9 games against GSU after a split last season. Former Gamecock Austin Cornelius tossed a complete game in the win on April 30 at the GSU Baseball Complex. Cornelius went the distance, scattering 11 hits, five runs, four strikeouts and walked one Panther.
• The Gamecocks begin the weekend as the one of the NCAA Division I Baseball leaders in triples. In the first 28 games, Jax State has collected 13 triples (all at home) and ranks 12th in the nation behind Arizona (20). Senior Drew Collins, redshirt sophomore Cooper Blauser and junior Caleb Johnson have three triples each.
• Junior Carson Hornung extended his on-base streak to 24 games last weekend against Kennesaw State. Against the Owls, Hornung was 6-for-11 with four walks. Hornung has reached base via a walk 31 times, which leads CUSA entering the week. Dating back to the last 20 games of the 2024 season and the 21 games in 2025, Drew Collins has reached base in 45-of-the-last-50 games. Juniors Caleb Johnson and Brady Thomas have reached safely in nine consecutive games.
• The Gamecocks were rewarded with a win via forfeit in the opening game of the twinbill against Liberty on Saturday, Match 29. For conference weekends in CUSA, each team is to submit a 27-man roster for the entire series. When Jax State came to the plate in the first inning, it was brought to the umpires attention that Liberty's starting pitcher was not on the 27-man roster that was turned in to the three-man crew prior to the start of the series on Friday, deeming the starting pitcher an ineligible player and the game ended in a forfeit in favor of the Gamecocks. There have been only five forfeits in Major League Baseball (MLB) since 1954; the last forfeit was in 1995, and prior to that, 1979. The 1995 MLB forfeit was between the Cardinals and the Dodgers on August 10, 1995. The Dodgers forfeited a home game vs. the Cardinals because of souvenir balls. NC State Wolfpack baseball team was disqualified from 2021 College World Series due to Covid-19 protocols after reaching the semifinals against Vanderbilt.
• The Gamecocks have strung together four consecutive wins in midweek contests dating back to their win over Troy on March 11. Jax State has secured wins over in-state foes - Troy, Samford (2), UAB and Alabama State. In the five wins, Jax State is hitting .304 and an earned run average of 3.27.
• Freshman Maddox McDougall has solidified his spot on the pitching staff as a fourth starter after back-to-back solid starts at UAB (March 25) and last Tuesday at Alabama State. In his last three outings, he has a 1.46 ERA in 12.1 innings of work with a pair of earned runs on seven hits. He has combined for 12 strikeouts in thelast three appearances. In his four midweek outings, he has an ERA of 1.23 over 14.2 IP while limiting opposing hitters to a .163 average against him.
