Softball Sweeps Second Day at Mardi Gras Invitational

Jax State bounced back with a pair of wins on Saturday, knocking off UAB 9-1 in five innings and the host South Alabama 8-4.

The day started with a run-rule victory over UAB, highlighted by a second inning grand slam by Emma Elrod to take a 5-0 lead. Elrod was 2-for-3 on the day, driving in two more with a double to left center in the fifth to give the Gamecocks an eight-run advantage and end the game.

Mikayla Deville was responsible for the game's first run when she drew a bases-loaded walk. She also drew one in the fifth after Jaci Underwood doubled home Aria Davis.

Haleigh Cushingberry was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored.

Yulai Woodruff picked up the win, allowing just one earned run on three hits over 3.2 innings of work.

The Gamecocks scored twice in the top of the first against South Alabama, getting a sacrifice fly from Kailey Martin and Morgan Nowakowski scored on a wild pitch.

South Alabama answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the first and again in the second to tie the game. Martin got the Gamecocks back on top in the third with an RBI double, then a two-run single by Makayln Kyser made it a three-run lead.

The Jaguars got within a run in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run double, but the Gamecocks again came back with runs in the fifth on a two-run single by Aria Davis in the fifth and a sacrifice fly by Nowakowski in the sixth. Davis finished the day 2-for-4.

Deville had a pair of hits in the leadoff spot, as did Elrod in the two-hole.

Makenna Moore picked up the win in relief working three shutout innings, coaxing seven groundouts against the 12 batters she faced.

The Gamecocks will wrap up the trip tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. with Western Michigan.
