Softball Begins Eight-Game Road Trip

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — Jax State softball hits the road once more after coming off a six-game homestand, including hosting the Jax State Tournament at Jana McGinnis Field this past weekend.
The Gamecocks (11-5) will have a quick turnaround as they will travel just across the state line to take on the West Georgia Wolves on Tuesday night at 4 p.m., beginning the first of eight straight road games for Jax State.
Head coach Julie Boland's squad went 4-1 over the weekend, defeating DePaul twice (7-0, 3-0), along with victories over Gardner-Webb (16-4) and Northwestern State (10-0), while falling to Gardner-Webb 8-2 in the final game of the tournament. Overall, the Gamecocks outscored their opponents 38-12 in the five-game stretch.
Jax State saw a variety of impressive performances throughout the home opening week, both at the plate and in the circle.
Morgan Nowakowski led the Gamecocks at the dish during the tournament, recording two hits in each of the first four games of the weekend to bring her season batting average to .449 which leads the team. Additionally, Nowakowski picked up two more doubles to bring her season tally to eight, which ties for No. 4 in the country.
Of the 38 runs that Jax State scored during the weekend, Aria Davis and Jaci Underwood combined to bat in 12 of them, with Davis picking up at least one RBI in all five games.
Freshman Makenna Moore stole the show in the circle for Boland's squad, as the young pitcher tallied 23 strikeouts, while only allowing seven hits and two runs across 11 innings pitched. Moore picked up 15 of those strikeouts against DePaul on Saturday afternoon which tied Tera Ross for the most by any freshman pitcher in Jax State softball history.
Jaliyah Holmes also had a productive weekend as well, tallying two wins against DePaul and Northwestern State. The senior pitcher gave up just five hits across 12 innings pitched, along with tallying eight strikeouts across both games.
Jax State has now scored 124 runs across its 16 games played this season, which ranks No. 1 in Conference USA and No. 14 nationally.
West Georgia comes into Tuesday's contest with a 5-11 record after losing four of its last five games at the South Alabama Tournament last weekend. The Wolves are led by junior Jenna Samuel, who is batting .511 on the year which ranks No. 4 in the ASUN.
The Gamecocks will stay on the road following the midweek matchup, taking a trip to Mississippi for the Ole Miss Classic, beginning on Friday afternoon. Jax State will play two games each against ULM and No. 25 Ole Miss.
