Gamecocks Make Maiden Voyage to Ohio

ATHENS, Ohio—It's hard to believe that a program with a history that dates back 122 years and nearly 1,100 games hasn't ever made a trip to a certain location.
That is the case tonight as Jax State plays at Ohio, marking the first game in the Buckeye State for the Gamecocks and the second meeting between the two programs that faced off in the 2024 StaffDNA Cure Bowl.
Calling the game a Cure Bowl rematch might be a stretch as there are only three players dressing tonight that registered stats at Camping World Stadium in the game, led by defensive lineman Jawaun Campbell's eight total tackles.
For Ohio, fifth year wide receiver Eian Pugh had one catch for 14 yards against the Gamecocks, junior running back Duncan Brune saw some reps, and on defense, free safety DJ Walker had two tackles including one for loss, and Aiden Lowery had a tackle on special teams.
Jax State picked up a 49-7 win in last week's home opener over Eastern Kentucky to improve to 1-1 on the season. Quarterback Caden Creel had a career night with 327 yards passing and five touchdowns. Jamill Williams had touchdown receptions of 13, 55, 30, and 4-yards to earn Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Defensively, interceptions by Ty Sims and Caleb Nix marked the 19th consecutive game with a takeaway. Nix found the end zone for the third time in his career, returning his second quarter interception 43 yards for a touchdown.
The game serves as the home opener for the Bobcats, which dropped a 49-21 game at Nebraska last week in a game where they had a 13-7 lead early in the second quarter and only trailed by a point at the intermission. Quarterback Nick Poulos was 14-of-31 for 164 yards with a touchdown and added one on the ground. Riley Neer was his favorite target with six catches for 104 yards.
The game will air on ESPN+ as well as the Gamecock Sports Network.
