JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State edged out Murray State by six points in the smallbore and 74 points in the air rifle to win the 2008 Gamecock Invitational last weekend at the Gamecock Rifle Range.
The Gamecocks, who have won nine straight events, finished with a team aggregate score of 4,624 points to win the event by 80 points over Murray State, which finished with 4,544 points. The Magic City Gun Club Blue and Red teams claimed fourth and fifth followed by Shelby County Shooting Sports and the Blue Dragons.
Following Murray in the air rifle were Magic City Blue and Red, UAB, Shelby County Shooting Sports, the Blue Dragons and Mercer University.
Brian Carstensen and
Michael Dickinson were JSU's top shooters in the smallbore. Carstensen targeted a 578 followed by Dickinson with 574 points. Matt McKenzie had 566 points and Phillip Huckaby tallied 564 points.
Dickinson and Huckaby tied with 586 points in the air rifle. Carstensen and
Andrea Dardas were one-point behind with 585 points.
The weekend wrapped up the fall portion of the 2008-09 schedule for the Gamecocks. JSU returns to action on Jan. 17 against Morehead State.
