BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Jacksonville State sophomore
Brooke Schumacher was named the Ohio Valley Conference's Setter of the Week for her efforts in the Gamecocks' opening weekend, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.
Schumacher, a 5-foot-7-inch native of Lake In The Hills, Ill., led all OVC players with 11 assists over the weekend. She averaged 11.10 assists per game to lead the Gamecocks' offense in the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational in Indianapolis.
After recording just 22 assists in Saturday's season opener, a 3-0 loss to Tulsa, Schumacher rebounded to pick up 49 assists in a four-game loss to IUPUI on Sunday, a match that also saw her record 10 digs for her first double-double of the year. In Sunday's second match, a 3-0 sweep of Evansville, she recorded 40 assists.
Schumacher was an All-Newcomer selection as freshman in 2007 after dishing a JSU Division I record 1,401 assists, the third-highest total in school history. She finished second in the OVC and 23rd nationally in assists per game with an average of 13.09.
Schumacher and the Gamecocks will return to the court on Tuesday, when they open their home season at 7 p.m. against Auburn at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Admission is free for all fans.
