JACKSONVILLE – Eastern Illinois used a big run at start the game and a late one to put it away on Saturday night, when the Panthers handed the Jacksonville State men's basketball team its first home loss of the season, 78-69 at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The Panthers (5-8, 2-1 Ohio Valley Conference) jumped on the Gamecocks (7-4, 1-1 OVC) and then answered a second-half JSU run to pull away and pick up their fifth straight win in the series and their sixth in nine tries. EIU jumped out to a 22-8 lead in the first nine minutes, and after the Gamecocks stormed back to take the lead in the second half with a 16-0 run, the visitors answered with nine unanswered to reclaim the lead for good.
Sophomore Jeremy Bynum led the Gamecocks with 15 points, thanks to five 3-point baskets in a career-high 40 minutes on the floor. Senior Jonathan Toles added 14 points and six assists, while sophomore Nick Murphy and freshman Brandon Crawford scored 11 and 10, respectively. The Gamecocks got just 15 points from their bench, which had been averaging 37 per game coming into the game.
The Panthers got just two points from their bench, but they got double figures from all five starters, led by Tyler Laser's game-high 22 points. Oismane Cisse scored 12, but grabbed 10 rebounds to record the game's only double-double.
Senior DeAndre Bray dished a season-high 11 assists for the Gamecocks and added six points on a pair of treys that came in the JSU's second-half run. Murphy led JSU with nine rebounds in a game that saw EIU finish with a 40-28 advantage on the glass.
After pulling out to the 22-8 lead, the Panthers held off JSU for the rest of the half and took a 41-27 advantage into the locker room at the intermission. They would lead by their largest margin at 47-32 at the 16:54 mark in the second half and then by 14 at 49-35 40 second later before the Gamecocks went on their run.
It took JSU barely more than four minutes to turn the 14-point deficit into a 51-49 lead with 12:05 to play. The Gamecocks pushed the advantage to three at 56-53 with 9:56 on the clock, but the Panthers scored the next nine to build a 62-56 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

The Gamecocks will return to the floor on Monday, when they play host to Southeast Missouri at 7:30 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum. The game will be the second of a doubleheader with the women, who will play at 5:30 p.m. Both games will be televised on TV24 in Jacksonville and will be broadcast on the JSU Radio Network with Mike Parris calling the action.
