JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team will be at home on Wednesday, when the Gamecocks host Kennesaw State at 5 p.m. at University Field. Admission is free for all fans.
The Gamecocks (10-4) will play at home for just the second time this season and will welcome an Owls (6-8) team that defeated Ohio Valley Conference member Eastern Illinois on Friday in its only game of the KSU Owl Classic. JSU went 2-0 at the University of Tennessee Softball Classic before inclement weather cut the weekend short. The Gamecocks have won four of their last five games.
Leading the way early in the 2009 season has been the offensive tandem of senior Allie Barker and junior Nikki Prier. Barker, a native of Gadsden, is hitting a team-best .422, while leading the squad with three home runs. With 11 RBI, she is tied for the team lead with Prier, a Raleigh, N.C. native that is second on the team with a .412 batting average.
The JSU pitching staff has been a big part of the Gamecocks' early success. The staff has combined for a combined 2.82 ERA and has put together seven complete games and three shutouts. Senior Melissa Dowling is 4-0 with a 1.12 ERA and has tossed three complete games in her four starts.
Newcomers Allison Svoboda and Hillary Downs have been pleasant surprises to 16th-year head coach Jana McGinnis. Svoboda, a freshman from Gardendale, Ala., is batting .371 with seven RBI through her first 13 collegiate games, while Downs, a junior college transfer from Childersburg, Ala., is batting .364 with two doubles, a triple and a home run.
