JSU, Austin Peay Play To A 1-1 Draw In OVC Soccer Action

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State recorded its third draw in Ohio Valley Conference play as JSU and Austin Peay finished the Friday night match, 1-1, at a chilly JSU Soccer Field.

It marks the Gamecocks' fourth-straight overtime contest, which ranks second in the program's history for extra session matches in a season.  The 1999 squad finished with five overtime affairs.

The draw kept Jax State's aspirations of making the OVC Tournament alive with just three matches left in the season.  JSU moved to 2-11-3 overall and 1-2-3 in league matches.  The Lady Govs of APSU stands at 7-5-1 on the season and 1-2-1 in the OVC.

After a scoreless first 31 minutes of the contest, JSU struck first with a goal off a header by freshman Kaitlyn Gregory.  After a perfect cross from a corner kick, Gregory flicked the ball past APSU's Haylee Shoaff.

“It was exciting to see a right back defender get a goal for you, “said head coach Julie Davis Carlson.  “It was a great ball off of a set piece.”

JSU staved off multiple scoring chances by APSU throughout the contest as the Lady Govs posted 24 shots in the contest.  APSU turned in the equalizing goal after Emily Perkins capitalized on a cross ball from Tatiana with 12 minutes left in regulation.

The Gamecocks had a plethora of opportunities to add to its lead and to put away the contest in the first overtime session.  Senior Chelsea Pelletier led the Red and White attack with six shots on the evening.  Freshman Taylor Mitchell's ball early in the first overtime carried off the cross bar missing the back of the net by inches.

“I am proud of the way the kids played tonight and they know we had chances to put the game away early and in overtime,” added Carlson.  “I thought we had more offense tonight and we did a good job of keeping our composure.  We also had some folks come off the bench and give us a spark, especially Taylor Mitchell and Myla Senff.”

Jax State finished with 18 total shots, including four on goal opportunities.  Junior Katelyn Geddings turned in another double figure save match with 12.

The Gamecocks close the curtain on the 2011 home schedule on Sunday, Oct. 16, welcoming Murray State to Jacksonville.  JSU will honor its five departing seniors prior to the 1 p.m. kick off.  The Racers topped Tennessee Tech, 2-1, on Friday in Cookeville, Tenn.
