JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team dropped a non-conference game on Thursday evening, when UAB claimed a 7-0 win over the Gamecocks at University Field.
The Blazers (30-11) used a pair of three-run innings and a solid pitching performance from Leigh Streetman to hand the Gamecocks (28-11) the defeat, snapping a three-game streak by JSU.
Jax State mustered just four hits, which were scattered by four players. Seniors
Amanda Crow and
Sallie Beth Burch each singled once in the game, while junior
Abbey Stepp and freshman
Hayden Crawford also notched singles. JSU did draw a pair of walks and two hit by pitches but ended up stranding eight runners on the basepaths.
The Blazers got a 4-for-4, two-RBI night from Caley Walden and a 2-for-4 effort from Kayla Orr that included a two-run home run. They plated three in the second and three more in the fourth to take control of the game. Their 14 hits were the most against the JSU staff this season.
Freshman
Savanna Hennings (2-2) was tagged with the loss in the circle for JSU after surrendering six runs, five earned, on 11 hits in 3.2 innings of work. Sophomore
Hilary Phillips pitched the final 3.2 innings and limited UAB to a run on three hits.
Streetman (10-4) held the Gamecocks to four hits in her six innings of work that saw her strike out six and walk one. Amber Torres tossed the final frame and allowed a walk while recording a strikeout.
The Gamecocks will be at home this weekend, when they host Austin Peay in at three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at University Field. The set will start with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and wrap up with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free.
