KENNESAW, Ga. – Jacksonville State and Kennesaw State played to a 1-1 draw in exhibition soccer action on Friday night at the KSU Soccer Stadium. The friendly match served as a tune up for both squads as they begin the regular season next Friday.
The Gamecocks scored the match's first goal of the night as junior Nathalee Lariviere registered the goal in the 23rd minute of the contest. Lariviere, who ranked second on the team a season ago in scoring, took the assist from junior Katie Manns for the lone JSU goal of the night.
KSU responded with the equalizing goal 12 minutes later as Katie Schwartz capitalized on a corner kick as Alyssa Mahan dished out the assist. Combined, both teams turned in 14 shots in the final half, but neither scored the go-ahead goal.
The Gamecocks finished with nine shots, led by Lariviere and senior Chelsea Pelletier's pair of attempts. The Owls were credited with 18 shot attempts as Brittany Vining turned in a match-high seven shot attempts.
Junior Katelyn Geddings earned the start in goal before Ali Koenig manned the goal in the final 45 minutes.
Jax State Head Coach Julie Davis Carlson saw many bright spots from her squad in its first live competition of the preseason.
“I was very pleased with our overall performance. We played several players in several areas,” said Carlson. “Our team came out hard and executed the game plan. There are some situations that occurred tonight that we can resolve.”
Carlson pointed out the play of several newcomers to the program in their first taste of collegiate soccer.
“Newcomers Jessica Monahan (Marietta, Ga.), Kaitlyn Gregory (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Brianna Salverda (Calgary, Canada) have really stepped up in our defense after graduating key players,” mentioned Carlson. “Katie Manns led our central midfield. We have a lot of talent and I am very excited about their creativity,” added Carlson.
Jax State will open its 16th season on Friday, Aug. 19 against Mercer in Macon, Ga. Kick off is set for 3 p.m. CST. The season opener on the road will be the first of four consecutive road matches for JSU to begin the season. JSU 's home debut is set for Friday, Sept. 2 against Western Athletic Conference foe New Mexico State in the opening day of the Adidas/Gamecock Soccer Classic.
