JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's soccer team will kick start the 2011-12 JSU athletic year on Friday, traveling to Macon, Ga. to face Mercer. Kick off is set for 4 p.m. CST at Bear Field.
JSU is set to open its 17th season of intercollegiate soccer and the seventh under head coach Julie Davis Carlson. The 2011squad will be anchored by the senior class of Chelsea Pelletier, Emily Bielaga, Lindsay Boehmler, Millie Parekh and Martina Dessbesell. Pelletier enters her final season on the pitch after leading JSU in scoring as a junior with seven goals. Senior Emily Bielaga will solidify the Jax State defense, while seniors Lindsay Boehmler and Millie Parekh will aid in the offensive attack. Dessbesell moves from the JSU women's tennis team over to soccer after a stellar career on the court.
A host of newcomers arrived on campus when the preseason started and most will get time on the pitch this season. In last week's exhibition match at Kennesaw State, Carlson noted the play of Jessica Monahan, Kaitlyn Gregory and Brianna Salverda. JSU also looks for contributions from its junior class, led by Nathalee Lariviere and goalkeepers Katelyn Geddings and Ali Koenig. Lariviere ranked second on the team in scoring as a junior, while Geddings and Koenig shared keeper duties last season.
The Gamecocks will be tested in the first weekend of the season as both Mercer and Middle Tennessee State, who the Gamecocks square off with on Sunday, participated in the 2010 NCAA Tournament after winning the automatic bid from their respective leagues. MU claimed the Atlantic Sun Championship and posted a final mark of 10-9-1. The Blue Raiders won the Sun Belt Conference Championship a season ago and will be the perennial favorite to repeat. MTSU returns eight starters off the 2010 club that went 13-9-1 on the season.
This weekend's pair of road trips will be the first of two straight weekend's on the road for Jax State. Next weekend, the Gamecocks will test Conference USA foe Southern Mississippi on Friday, Aug. 26 before battling in-state rival South Alabama on Sunday, Aug. 28.
JSU's home opener is set for Friday, Sept. 2 against Western Athletic Conference foe New Mexico State in the opening day of the Adidas/Gamecock Soccer Classic.
