MOBILE – South Alabama scored two early goals en route to turning back Jacksonville State, 2-0, in an in-state battle on the pitch Sunday on the USA campus.
The Gamecocks dropped to 0-4-0 on the season, while the Jaguars bumped their season's mark to 3-1-0.
USA registered both of its goals in the first 12 minutes of the contest. It didn't take long for the Jaguars to get on the scoreboard as Landi Wilson connected on a shot from a cross, just two minutes into the match. USA added its second goal in the 12th minute after Brandi Smith netted her second goal of the season after being assisted by Shawn Meach and Rachael Hess. The Red and Blue fired 16 times, but put just seven between the posts. Wilson had three other scoring opportunities at the goal, including a match-best six total attempts.
JSU managed seven shots in the match, with a pair of the attempts coming on target. Junior Nathalee Lariviere and senior Lindsay Boehmler had two shots each to lead the Jax State attack.
The Gamecocks became short-handed at goalkeeper as both Katelyn Geddings and Ali Koenig left the contest with injuries. Geddings, a junior from Warrior, Ala., started the match before exiting in the 37th minute. Koening took over for Geddings, who played the next 30 minutes. Senior forward Chelsea Pelletier played the final 22 minutes of the affair in goal. The Fort Worth, Texas native excelled with a pair of stops.
“We had chances in both halves, but did not execute,” said head coach Julie Davis Carlson. “Lindsay Boehmler came in and gave us a spark offensively. She helped create, execute and did well making plays.”
Carlson also pointed out the offensive contributions by freshman Jackie Rush, junior Myla Senff and freshman Courtney Hurt.
The rivalry contest was physical with five yellow cards issued. Jax State was handed of them – Lariviere, Rush and Kelsey Robertson.
“The game physically got out of control, which led to the amount of yellow cards, which really offset the quality of the match,” added Carlson.
After spending the first two weekends of the season on the road, JSU will open its eight-match home slate on Friday, Sept. 2 as it plays host to the annual Adidas Gamecock Classic. The first day pits the Gamecocks against Western Athletic Conference member New Mexico State at 7:30 p.m. at the JSU Soccer Field. Prior to the JSU-NMSU duel, Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee Tech will face Louisiana Tech at 5 p.m.
